Your First Claude API Call with 59API in 5 Minutes
What You Need Before You Start
You can make a working Claude API call with only an API key, a terminal, and a few minutes. This tutorial uses 59API, a low-cost AI API relay with pay-as-you-go access to official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable options. It also supports GPT models, making it useful when you want one provider endpoint for multiple model families.
59API uses the base URL https://api.59api.com. Its Claude-compatible interface means you can use the standard Anthropic Messages API request format while benefiting from competitive relay pricing without intentionally downgraded models.
You will need an active 59API account, API credit, and a terminal with curl installed. You can sign up for 59API when you are ready to send your first request.
Step 1: Create and Store Your API Key
Open the 59API dashboard, generate an API key, and copy it immediately. Treat this value like a password: anyone who has it can make requests that consume your balance. Do not place it in frontend JavaScript, public repositories, screenshots, or client-side mobile apps.
For a quick local test, save the key as an environment variable. In macOS or Linux, run: export API_KEY="your_59api_key_here". In Windows PowerShell, use: $env:API_KEY="your_59api_key_here". Environment variables keep secrets out of the command itself and make it easier to switch keys later.
Step 2: Choose a Claude Model
Check the 59API model list in your dashboard and copy the exact model ID shown there. Sonnet is usually the practical starting point for general coding, writing, analysis, and chat tasks because it balances intelligence, speed, and cost. Haiku is a strong fit for high-volume, fast responses, while Opus is better reserved for difficult reasoning or premium-quality work.
Model IDs can change as providers release new versions, so do not guess the identifier. In the request below, replace YOUR_CLAUDE_MODEL_ID with the exact Claude model ID available in your 59API account.
Step 3: Send Your First Messages API Request
Claude requests use the Messages API endpoint. Send a POST request to https://api.59api.com/v1/messages, include your key in the x-api-key header, and provide an Anthropic API version header. Run this command in your terminal as one line:
curl https://api.59api.com/v1/messages -H "content-type: application/json" -H "x-api-key: $API_KEY" -H "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" -d '{"model":"YOUR_CLAUDE_MODEL_ID","max_tokens":300,"messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Explain API rate limiting in one concise paragraph."}]}'
The messages array is the conversation input. Each item has a role and content. The max_tokens setting limits the maximum output length, which helps control latency and spending. For this simple prompt, 300 tokens is more than enough.
Step 4: Read the Response
A successful response is JSON. Look for a content array containing Claude's answer, commonly in a text object. You will also receive useful metadata such as the model used, stop reason, and input/output token counts. Logging token usage is a good habit because it helps you compare model costs and identify unexpectedly large prompts.
For production applications, parse the JSON and display only the returned text rather than the complete response object. Keep the raw response in secure logs during development, but avoid logging API keys or sensitive user prompts.
Step 5: Fix Common First-Call Errors
- 401 or authentication error: Confirm that your API key is active, has no extra spaces, and is being read from the correct environment variable.
- 404 error: Verify the endpoint is exactly /v1/messages and that the base URL is https://api.59api.com.
- Model not found: Copy the precise model ID from the 59API dashboard instead of using a guessed Claude name.
- 400 invalid request: Check that the JSON is valid, messages is an array, and max_tokens is a number.
- Rate or balance issue: Review your account balance and usage limits before retrying repeatedly.
Where to Go Next
Once curl works, move the same request into your backend code. Because 59API is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based workflows, you can standardize your AI integration while retaining flexibility across Claude and GPT models. Start with a low-cost model for routine work, set sensible output limits, and use the referral rebate program in the dashboard if it fits your usage strategy.
