Your First Claude API Call in 5 Minutes: Fixes & FAQ

API · EN · 2026-10-16

Your five-minute setup checklist

You do not need to build an application to test Claude. You need Python, an API key, an available Claude model ID, and a short request. This guide uses the OpenAI Python SDK through 59API’s compatibility layer, so you can test Claude without starting with a different client library.

59API provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models. It positions itself among the cheapest relays and advertises native, official-quality models without downgrading. Compare current per-model rates before choosing: the cheapest option depends on your workload, input length, and output volume.

Before starting: have Python installed and a funded 59API account ready. The commands below use a macOS or Linux-style shell; Windows users should adapt the environment-variable syntax.

Minute 1: Create a key and install the SDK

If you want an inexpensive way to try Claude, sign up for 59API and create an API key in your account. Check that billing is enabled or sufficient credit is available; do not assume registration includes free requests.

Install the client:

python -m pip install --upgrade openai

Set your relay key locally:

export OPENAI_API_KEY='YOUR_59API_KEY'

Keep this key private. Never put it in browser JavaScript, screenshots, public repositories, or shared logs. The variable name is an SDK convention; its value must be your 59API key, not an unrelated provider’s key.

Minute 2: Find an available Claude model

The service root is https://api.59api.com. For this OpenAI-compatible example, use https://api.59api.com/v1 as the SDK base URL. Do not append /chat/completions yourself; the SDK supplies the resource path.

Check the model catalog in your account. You can also try listing models through the compatibility endpoint:

python -c "from openai import OpenAI; c=OpenAI(base_url='https://api.59api.com/v1'); print([m.id for m in c.models.list().data])"

If model listing is unavailable, use the model IDs documented by 59API. Copy an exact, currently supported Claude ID rather than guessing a version or using a display label.

export CLAUDE_MODEL='EXACT_CLAUDE_MODEL_ID'

Minutes 3–5: Send your first request

Run this single-line Python command:

python -c "import os; from openai import OpenAI; c=OpenAI(base_url='https://api.59api.com/v1'); r=c.chat.completions.create(model=os.environ['CLAUDE_MODEL'], messages=[{'role':'user','content':'Say hello in one sentence.'}], max_tokens=100); print(r.choices[0].message.content)"

You should see a short greeting. That confirms your credentials, endpoint, model selection, and response parsing work together. Start with this non-streaming text request before adding tools, images, long conversations, or streaming.

Cost control: the small output limit keeps this test modest, but input tokens still count. For later experiments, compare available Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus pricing against the task’s quality requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the native Claude Messages API? No. This example uses OpenAI-compatible chat completions. Native Claude integrations use a different request format; do not mix their headers or payloads with this example.

Can I use Claude Code or Codex? 59API supports these tools, but their configuration differs from this Python test. Follow the current tool-specific instructions rather than copying SDK settings blindly.

How can I reduce ongoing costs? Keep prompts focused, cap output, and choose models using representative tests. 59API also offers a referral rebate; check current eligibility and terms separately from usage pricing.
