Your First Claude API Call in Five Minutes

Claude is straightforward to call once you know the three essentials: an API key, a model name, and the Messages API request format. • 4. Read the answer from the content array. Claude returns structured JSON rather than just a plain text string. In a standard response, look for the first text block in content, typically content[0].text. Also inspect stop_reason and usage. The usage object reports input and output token counts, which helps you understand cost and detect unexpectedly large prompts.
• 5. Set a realistic token cap before going further. The max_tokens value is the maximum size of Claude's response, not a request for exactly that many tokens. For a short test, 300 is enough. For structured extraction or code generation, raise it only as needed. Tight token caps keep early experiments predictable and are especially useful on a pay-as-you-go service.
• 6. Add a system instruction for production behavior. Once the basic call works, include a system field to establish stable rules. For example: "You are a support assistant. Give accurate answers in under 120 words. State uncertainty clearly." Keep system instructions focused. Put dynamic customer questions in messages, and avoid repeatedly sending long reference documents when a smaller relevant excerpt will do.
• 7. Handle errors deliberately. A 401 response usually means the API key is missing, invalid, or sent under the wrong header. A 400 response commonly indicates an invalid model ID or malformed JSON. For rate-limit or temporary server errors, retry with exponential backoff and a small amount of random delay. Do not blindly retry requests that may trigger downstream side effects.
• 8. Keep portability in mind. Because 59API is compatible with Claude-style workflows and supports OpenAI SDK use cases, you can often preserve your existing application structure while changing credentials and base URL configuration. That lowers the friction of testing models and controlling spend without accepting a downgraded model experience.
