What Is MCP? Setup, Errors, and Developer FAQs

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools, data sources, and workflows. Instead of building a different integration for every assistant, developers can expose capabilities through an MCP server that compatible applications can use.

For example, a coding assistant could read an approved project directory, query a database, or retrieve documentation through MCP. The protocol standardizes communication; it does not automatically grant access, guarantee correct answers, or replace a model API.

How does MCP work?

Three components matter when troubleshooting:

Servers can expose tools, resources, and reusable prompts. Tools perform actions; resources provide contextual content; prompts provide templates. Client support varies, so a working server does not mean every feature appears in every application.

MCP uses JSON-RPC messages. Connections begin with initialization and capability negotiation. For tools, clients can then request tools/list and invoke a selected tool through tools/call. The host mediates between model-generated requests and actual execution.

How do I connect my first MCP server?

Start with a narrowly scoped local filesystem server rather than production credentials. With Node.js and Claude Code installed:

This example uses standard input/output, or stdio: the client launches a local subprocess. For repeatable deployments, review the package and pin an approved version rather than automatically downloading the latest release.

Why does my MCP server fail to connect?

Is MCP the same as an OpenAI-compatible API?

No. A model API handles inference: sending messages and receiving generated output. MCP connects the application to external capabilities. An OpenAI-compatible base URL is not an MCP server address.

This distinction helps control costs. 59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models through https://api.59api.com, with native models rather than downgraded substitutes. It supports Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows. Configure the model connection separately from MCP servers, following the client's endpoint requirements.

MCP does not make inference free: tool descriptions and returned content can increase token usage. Keep tool outputs focused. If you want an economical model backend, consider signing up for 59API; a referral rebate is also available under its current terms.

Is MCP safe to use?

Safety depends on server trust and permissions. Limit filesystem access, use read-only database credentials where possible, and require approval for destructive actions. Treat retrieved content as untrusted: malicious documents can contain prompt-injection instructions. Keep secrets out of prompts and logs, and remember that local MCP output may still be sent to your configured model service.
