What Is MCP? A Practical Developer’s Guide for 2026

Guias · EN · 2026-10-20

What Is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol for connecting AI applications to external tools, data sources, and reusable workflows. Instead of building a separate integration for every assistant and service, developers can expose capabilities through an MCP server and connect compatible applications to it.

For example, a coding assistant could use MCP to read project documentation, inspect database schemas, or retrieve issue details. The assistant still needs a model provider for reasoning and generation. MCP standardizes the integration layer; it does not replace the model API.

How MCP Works: Hosts, Clients, and Servers

MCP uses JSON-RPC messages. Its architecture separates three responsibilities:

During initialization, the client and server negotiate a protocol version and declare capabilities. The host can then discover available functionality and decide what to expose to the model. A typical tool workflow involves discovering tools, supplying their schemas to the model, approving a requested action, executing it through MCP, and returning the result to the model.

Tools, Resources, and Prompts Are Different

Not every server implements all three, and not every host supports them equally. Check the host’s actual feature support before designing an integration around resources or prompts.

MCP Security Best Practices for 2026

Treat every server and tool result as a trust boundary. Retrieved documents can contain prompt injection, and tool descriptions are not proof of safety. Restrict filesystem roots, database roles, and network destinations. Require explicit approval for destructive actions, payments, and sensitive data exports.

For remote servers, use HTTPS and implement the applicable MCP authorization flow. Validate token audiences and permissions; do not pass unrelated upstream tokens through the server. Keep model-provider credentials separate from MCP credentials. Add execution timeouts, response-size limits, and audit logs with secrets redacted.

Where 59API Fits in an MCP Stack

MCP access and model inference are separate concerns. Your host connects to MCP servers for capabilities and to a model endpoint for reasoning. 59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models through https://api.59api.com, with compatibility for Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK integrations.

59API positions itself among the cheapest relays and offers native, official-quality models without downgrades, plus a referral rebate. Compare current model prices and availability against your workload, and verify the required authentication and endpoint settings. Using a relay does not automatically add MCP support; your application must implement that separately. If affordable model access suits your project, consider signing up for 59API and testing a small, measured workload first.
