What Is MCP? A Developer’s 15-Minute Quick Start

गाइड · EN · 2026-10-30

What Is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that lets AI applications connect to external tools, data sources, and reusable workflows through a standardized interface. Instead of building a different integration for every assistant, you can expose a capability through an MCP server and connect it to compatible applications.

For example, a coding assistant could read project files, query an issue tracker, or inspect a database through MCP servers. MCP standardizes how those capabilities are discovered and invoked; it does not supply the language model or automatically authorize access.

The Architecture in One Minute

MCP uses JSON-RPC messages. During initialization, clients and servers negotiate protocol compatibility and capabilities. Common transports are stdio for local processes and Streamable HTTP for remote services.

Servers can expose tools that perform actions, resources containing contextual data, and prompts offering reusable interaction templates. Support varies by host, so check which features your application implements.

Quick Start: Connect a Local Filesystem Server

This example gives an MCP-compatible application access to a dedicated test directory. You need Node.js, npm, and a host that supports local stdio MCP servers.

Under the hood, tool discovery and invocation use methods such as tools/list and tools/call. If the server connects but no tools appear, check capability support and host-side permissions before blaming the model.

MCP Is Not a Model API

A model API handles inference: you send messages and receive generated output. MCP connects the surrounding application to external capabilities. Changing your inference endpoint does not automatically configure MCP, and an OpenAI-compatible SDK alone is not an MCP client. Your application still needs an MCP integration and a tool-execution loop.

This separation makes 59API useful for cost-conscious development. It offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go model access at https://api.59api.com, with compatibility for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDK workflows. For example, you could select Claude Sonnet 5.5 in a supported setup while your host manages MCP connections independently. Follow the relevant client configuration instructions; model access and tool support are separate concerns.
