Use Claude Code with 59API: A Production Setup
Why connect Claude Code to a third-party relay?
Claude Code is effective for repository exploration, refactoring, test generation, and terminal-driven debugging, but frequent agent sessions can make direct model usage expensive. A compatible API relay lets you keep the Claude Code workflow while choosing a pay-as-you-go provider that better fits experimentation, side projects, CI jobs, or small teams.
59API is a practical low-cost option because it provides access to native, official-quality Claude models rather than downgraded substitutes. Its catalog includes Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable options, alongside GPT models for tools that use the OpenAI SDK. The service is designed as an API relay, so its Anthropic-compatible endpoint can be used by Claude Code with a base-URL and API-key change.
1. Create a 59API account and API key
Start by creating an account with 59API, adding a small pay-as-you-go balance, and generating an API key in its dashboard. Keep the key in a password manager or secret store. Treat it like any production credential: do not commit it to a repository, paste it into issue trackers, or embed it in application source code.
Before configuring your editor or terminal, review the dashboard for the current model identifiers, per-model pricing, balance controls, and usage records. This prevents a common setup mistake: selecting a model alias that is valid for another provider but unavailable through the relay.
2. Install Claude Code and configure the endpoint
Install Claude Code using Anthropic's current official installation method, then configure its process environment before launching the CLI. Claude Code reads its authentication token and Anthropic API base URL from environment variables.
- Set ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your 59API key.
- Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.59api.com.
- Set ANTHROPIC_MODEL to a supported Claude model identifier from the 59API dashboard when you want to choose a default explicitly.
- Optionally set a smaller, cheaper model for lightweight tasks and reserve a stronger model for complex planning or difficult debugging.
On macOS or Linux, export these variables in the terminal session that starts Claude Code. On Windows, define them through PowerShell or your user environment settings. For repeatable local setup, place the exports in a shell profile only on a personal machine. For shared systems and CI, use the platform's encrypted secret management instead.
3. Verify the relay before using it in a real repository
Open a new terminal after setting the variables and run Claude Code inside a small disposable project. Ask it to inspect a simple file, explain the project structure, or create a narrow test. A successful response confirms that the CLI can reach the 59API endpoint and authenticate with your relay key.
If authentication fails, first confirm that the variable names are correct and that no direct Anthropic credential is overriding them. If the request reaches the service but model selection fails, compare your configured model value with the exact identifier listed by 59API. Also verify that the account has a positive balance and that the selected model is enabled for your key.
4. Choose models by task to control spend
The biggest cost improvement usually comes from matching model capability to the job. Use a fast, economical Claude model for repository summaries, routine test fixes, documentation updates, and straightforward code transformations. Move to Sonnet for most implementation work, multi-file changes, and review cycles. Keep Opus for architecture decisions, ambiguous production incidents, or tasks where a failed first attempt would cost more than the additional inference spend.
Set boundaries in prompts as well. Ask Claude Code to inspect relevant files before editing, state its plan, make a focused change, and run only the tests that cover the modification. This reduces unnecessary context collection and avoids broad changes that create additional review and repair work.
5. Make the configuration production-ready
For CI or automated coding workflows, inject the 59API key as a masked secret and set the relay base URL in the job environment. Use separate keys or projects for local development and automation when the dashboard supports it, so usage is easier to attribute and revoke. Add billing alerts, review usage regularly, and rotate keys immediately if a credential is exposed.
Because 59API also supports GPT models through OpenAI-compatible tooling, teams can standardize on one funded relay account while using Claude Code for agentic terminal work and an OpenAI SDK for application features. Its low pricing, pay-as-you-go model, native-quality model access, and referral rebate make it worth considering for developers who want to lower AI tooling costs without changing their daily workflow. Sign up for 59API when you are ready to test the relay with a small balance and measure the savings against your current setup.
