Tool Calling Costs: Cut a Two-Turn Workflow by 49%

API · EN · 2026-10-14

Understand what tool calling actually bills

Tool use lets an AI model request an external action: searching documentation, checking inventory, querying a database, or calculating a shipping quote. Function calling is a structured form of tool use: the model selects a named function and supplies arguments that your application can validate and execute.

The important cost detail is that a tool call usually creates another model turn. You send instructions, conversation history, and tool definitions. The model returns a tool request. Your application executes it, then sends the result back so the model can answer. Both model requests consume tokens; the external service may charge separately.

For example, OpenAI Chat Completions uses assistant tool calls followed by tool messages associated with call IDs. Claude's native Messages format uses tool_use and tool_result content blocks. Preserve those associations, and use the format your chosen endpoint expects rather than mixing provider conventions.

Calculate the complete workflow, not one request

Use this formula: cost = input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate, with rates converted from their published per-million-token units. Add every model turn, retries, and any paid external tool execution.

Consider an order-status assistant at illustrative rates of $1 per million input tokens and $4 per million output tokens. These are calculation assumptions, not quoted 59API prices. Assume no caching discounts and 100,000 completed workflows monthly.

Now reduce unnecessary context, tool definitions, and response length. Suppose measured usage becomes 1,800 input and 120 output tokens for the first turn, then 2,100 input and 350 output tokens for the second.

That is $562 saved, approximately 49.3%, without changing the assumed model rates. Savings in production depend on actual usage and quality requirements.

Make tool definitions and results smaller

Control retries, permissions, and model routing

Validate arguments before execution. Enforce authorization in application code, not merely in the prompt. Use idempotency keys for payments or other state-changing actions so retries cannot duplicate them. Treat tool results as untrusted data, especially when they contain web content.

Set a maximum number of tool rounds and a per-request token budget. Log model usage, tool latency, retry counts, and task success. Test a lower-cost model on routine lookups, escalating ambiguous cases to a stronger model only when evaluation supports that policy. Compare cost per successfully completed task, not token price alone.

Lower the rate as well as the token count

59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without downgrading them. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it a practical option for existing workflows. The API base URL is https://api.59api.com; follow its integration documentation for endpoint paths and authentication.

Check current model rates, then benchmark representative tool workflows before switching production traffic. A referral rebate can provide additional savings, subject to its terms. If the measured quality and total cost fit your application, consider signing up for 59API and starting with a small usage budget.
