Token Billing Explained: Estimate API Costs in Minutes

省钱与定价 · EN · 2026-10-28

Start with the two numbers that drive your bill

Most text-generation APIs charge for input tokens and output tokens, usually quoted per million tokens. Input is what the model receives; output is what it generates. Because the rates can differ substantially, estimating costs from total tokens alone can be misleading.

59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to multiple model families through one relay. Its native official-quality models have no downgrade, making it a useful option for developers comparing costs without accepting a lower-quality substitute. Here is how to build a practical estimate before scaling.

1. Identify everything counted as input

Tokens are pieces of text, not necessarily whole words. For English prose, one token is often roughly four characters, but code, punctuation, non-English text, and structured data can tokenize differently. Treat that shortcut as a rough planning aid, not a billing measurement.

A model's context window is its capacity, not a flat fee. You generally pay for metered usage, not for the entire available window.

2. Calculate the cost of one request

For a basic text request without separate cache or modality charges, use this formula:

Request cost = (input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate) ÷ 1,000,000

Both rates must be prices per million tokens in the same currency. For illustration only—not a 59API quote—assume input costs $1 per million tokens and output costs $5 per million tokens.

Replace these illustrative rates with the current prices for your chosen model. If comparing Gemini 2.5 Flash and Claude Sonnet 5.5, calculate each separately using the same representative workload, then evaluate answer quality alongside cost.

3. Measure a small batch before forecasting

Configure your compatible client with your 59API credentials and the API base URL https://api.59api.com. Follow the client-specific setup instructions for any required path suffix; different tools handle base URLs differently. 59API supports Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDKs.

Run 20–50 realistic tasks, including short questions, long-context requests, and tool-heavy workflows. Record the selected model, input tokens, output tokens, and number of API calls per completed task.

Read the response's usage data rather than estimating from characters. Depending on the endpoint, fields may be named prompt_tokens and completion_tokens, or input_tokens and output_tokens. For streaming requests, check how the endpoint exposes final usage. Reconcile your logs against the billing dashboard.

4. Forecast completed tasks, not just requests

Monthly cost ≈ completed tasks × average API cost per task. A task may require several calls: planning, tool execution, correction, and a final answer. Retries and abandoned runs can still incur charges when billable processing occurs.

For the $60 example, a 20% planning reserve produces a $72 budget. That reserve is not a provider fee; it covers workload variation. Track unusually long tasks separately so averages do not hide expensive outliers.

5. Reduce spend without breaking the workflow

59API's low-cost, pay-as-you-go approach helps you test different models without committing to subscription capacity. A referral rebate can provide additional savings; check its current terms rather than including it in your baseline forecast. When you are ready, sign up and benchmark one real workflow before expanding.
