Token Billing Explained: Estimate AI API Costs

Tarifs · EN · 2026-10-07

What token billing actually measures

AI API providers do not normally charge per request, per user, or per word. They charge for tokens: small units of text processed by a language model. A token can be a whole short word, part of a longer word, punctuation, code syntax, or whitespace. In English prose, one token is often roughly three to four characters, but this is only a planning shortcut. Source code, JSON, URLs, non-English text, and long identifiers can use substantially more tokens.

Every model call usually has two billable parts: input tokens and output tokens. Input includes your system prompt, user message, conversation history, tool definitions, retrieved documents, and any other context sent with the request. Output is the model response, including generated text, code, structured data, and, where applicable, reasoning or other separately metered output. This means a short user question can still be expensive if your application repeatedly sends a large chat history or knowledge-base excerpt.

The basic AI API cost formula

Most model prices are quoted per one million tokens. To estimate one request, use this formula: (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate). If the provider charges separately for prompt caching, add cache-write and cache-read token charges as well.

For example, assume a model rate of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. A request with 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens costs: 2,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $3, plus 500 ÷ 1,000,000 × $15. That equals $0.006 plus $0.0075, or $0.0135 per request. At 10,000 similar requests per month, the projected model spend is about $135 before any extra features or taxes.

Model choice: cheaper requests versus better results

Cost estimation is not just arithmetic; it is a model-selection decision. Smaller, faster models generally offer the lowest cost for classification, extraction, short summaries, FAQ replies, and simple formatting. Higher-capability models are often worth their higher token rates for complex coding, multi-step analysis, difficult reasoning, nuanced writing, and high-stakes review.

A cheap model is not always the cheapest workflow. If it produces incorrect JSON, misses important details, or triggers frequent retry calls, its effective cost can exceed that of a more capable model. Compare models using successful-task cost: total monthly spend divided by the number of outputs that meet your quality standard.

A practical method for estimating monthly spend

Start with real representative requests rather than an idealized prompt. Log or sample at least 50 to 100 requests from each feature, then record average input tokens, average output tokens, request volume, retry rate, and the percentage of calls routed to each model. Use the current per-million-token rates for the exact model you plan to deploy.

For chat applications, the biggest savings usually come from controlling context growth. Summarize old messages, retrieve only relevant document chunks, avoid duplicating instructions, and use structured prompts that reduce back-and-forth. For batch jobs, test a small sample first and calculate actual token usage before processing an entire dataset.

Why 59API can lower implementation and token costs

59API is a useful low-cost option for developers who want pay-as-you-go access to Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, alongside GPT models. It provides native official-quality model access without a downgrade, while reducing the friction of managing separate integrations. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows also means teams can often switch endpoints instead of rewriting application logic. Use https://api.59api.com as the API base URL, verify the current model rates in the pricing area before launch, and track usage by model and feature.

Choosing a relay with competitive rates can improve unit economics, but disciplined token management remains essential. Combine a right-sized model, measured prompts, output limits, and production usage logs to build a forecast that stays accurate as traffic grows. If you are evaluating a lower-cost route for Claude or GPT development, you can sign up for 59API and test your real workloads; its referral rebate can further improve the economics for eligible users.
