Token Billing Explained: Estimate AI API Costs
Token billing starts with what the model actually reads and writes
If you use AI APIs often, token billing is the first thing to understand. A token is a chunk of text: sometimes a word, sometimes part of a word, sometimes punctuation. You are billed for the tokens you send to the model and the tokens it sends back. That means the total cost is not just the user prompt. System instructions, chat history, retrieved context, tool output, and the final answer can all affect your bill.
A practical rule of thumb for English is that 1 token is often around 3 to 4 characters, or roughly 0.75 words, but the exact count depends on the text. Long code blocks, JSON, logs, and pasted documents usually consume tokens faster than plain prose. If you are building with Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, or GPT models, token awareness helps you avoid surprise usage spikes.
The billing formula is simple
Most APIs charge different rates for input tokens and output tokens. The formula is:
estimated cost = (input tokens / 1,000,000) x input rate + (output tokens / 1,000,000) x output rate
Here is a hands-on example. Suppose your request includes a long system prompt and history that total 1,200 input tokens, and the model replies with 800 output tokens. If the model price is $2.50 per 1M input tokens and $12.00 per 1M output tokens, the math looks like this:
input cost: 1,200 / 1,000,000 x 2.50 = $0.003
output cost: 800 / 1,000,000 x 12.00 = $0.0096
total: $0.0126 for one request
This is why small prompts can still become expensive at scale. A thousand tiny calls per day is not tiny anymore when your prompts are bloated or your outputs are verbose.
How to estimate your own usage before launch
- Count the prompt you actually send: include system instructions, user text, history, and retrieved snippets.
- Estimate output length: summaries may be 100 to 300 tokens, support answers 200 to 600, and long drafts much more.
- Multiply by the published rates: use the input and output prices for your exact model tier.
- Add a buffer: build in 20 to 50 percent headroom for longer replies and retries.
- Track real usage: compare your estimates to actual bills after a few test runs.
To make this easier in code, store the rates in config and calculate per request. In JavaScript, the core formula is as simple as: const cost = (inputTokens / 1_000_000) * inputRate + (outputTokens / 1_000_000) * outputRate;
If you are using an OpenAI SDK compatible client, you can point it at 59API and keep the same workflow: const client = new OpenAI({ baseURL: 'https://api.59api.com/v1', apiKey: process.env.API_KEY }); const result = await client.chat.completions.create({ model: 'gpt-4o-mini', messages: [{ role: 'user', content: 'Draft a 3-step deployment checklist.' }] });
Why 59API helps you keep costs low
59API is a strong choice when you want cheap, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models without giving up model quality. Because it uses native, official-quality models with no downgrade, you are estimating against real behavior rather than a watered-down substitute. That matters when you are comparing prompt strategies, output lengths, or multiple models in production.
It is also easy to fit into existing tools. 59API is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK, so you can test cost control in the same environment your team already uses. The base URL is https://api.59api.com, which makes setup straightforward.
If your goal is to experiment without overspending, start with one small workflow, measure the token count, and then adjust prompts for length. You can often cut cost by shortening system prompts, trimming conversation history, or asking for concise answers first and expansions only when needed. The referral rebate is another nice bonus if you plan to share access with teammates or recommend the platform.
Bottom line: token billing is predictable once you separate input and output tokens, apply the rate formula, and test with real prompts. If you want to validate those numbers on a low-cost relay with official-quality model access, sign up for 59API and run a few small requests before scaling up.
