Temperature vs. Top_p: How AI Sampling Really Works

入门教程 · EN · 2026-10-08

Temperature and top_p are two settings that influence how a language model chooses its next token. They can make answers more varied or more predictable, but they work differently. Understanding that difference helps you tune a chatbot, code assistant, or content workflow without relying on trial and error.

How token sampling works

At each step, a model assigns possible next tokens different probabilities. For example, after “The capital of France is,” it might strongly favor “Paris.” Sampling selects a token from the model’s probability distribution, then repeats the process to build the response. Temperature and top_p modify which tokens are likely to be selected.

Temperature: adjust how concentrated the choices are

Temperature rescales the model’s token probabilities before sampling. Lower values make the most likely choices dominate; higher values spread probability across more alternatives. A setting near zero typically makes outputs more consistent, though it does not guarantee identical answers across every model or request.

Use a low temperature when you value consistency, such as generating structured summaries. Try a moderate setting for conversational writing, and raise it cautiously for brainstorming. The useful value depends on the model and task; there is no universal “best” temperature.

Top_p: limit the candidate pool

Top_p, also called nucleus sampling, keeps the smallest set of likely tokens whose combined probability reaches a chosen threshold. With top_p set to 0.9, for example, the sampler considers candidates that account for roughly 90% of the probability mass and excludes the long tail of less likely options. The exact behavior depends on the provider’s implementation.

Which setting should you change?

For most applications, start by changing one setting at a time. Keep the prompt, model, and other parameters fixed, then compare several outputs. If responses are too erratic, lower temperature or make top_p more restrictive. If they feel repetitive, cautiously increase variation. Record the settings alongside test prompts so you can reproduce a result.

In general, choose temperature when you want a straightforward control over how concentrated sampling is. Choose top_p when you want to limit the candidate pool by cumulative probability. Many model providers recommend adjusting one or the other rather than pushing both aggressively; changing both at once makes it harder to identify what caused a difference. Follow the API provider’s documentation, since supported ranges and defaults vary.

Practical tuning steps

Sampling settings shape selection, not knowledge. A low temperature cannot verify a claim, and a high top_p cannot make a model understand a task better. Clear instructions, appropriate models, validation, and testing remain essential.

Testing across models without overspending

Sampling behavior varies between models, so test your actual workload on the model you plan to deploy. 59API provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, through a single relay at https://api.59api.com. It is designed for compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs, and offers low-cost access to native, official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes. That can make side-by-side prompt and parameter tests more affordable. Developers can also use its referral rebate. If you are comparing models or tuning generation settings on a budget, consider signing up for 59API and testing with your own prompts.
