Temperature vs top_p: Fix Unpredictable AI Outputs

入门教程 · EN · 2026-10-17

What do temperature and top_p actually control?

When an AI model generates text, it assigns probabilities to possible next tokens. A token might be a word, part of a word, or punctuation. Sampling is the process of selecting a token from that distribution, then repeating the process until the response ends.

Temperature changes the distribution’s sharpness. Lower values concentrate probability on already-likely tokens; higher values spread probability more broadly. This influences variation, not knowledge or factual accuracy. A confident, low-temperature answer can still be wrong.

top_p limits the candidate pool. Also called nucleus sampling, it retains the smallest set of highest-probability tokens whose combined probability reaches the threshold. With top_p set to 0.9, the pool covers approximately 90% of the probability mass. It does not mean “keep 90% of all tokens.”

Implementations differ, but both controls shape token selection. Neither guarantees better reasoning, factual correctness, or compliance with your instructions.

Which settings should you try first?

Start with the model’s documented defaults, then change one control at a time. These are starting points for models that support configurable sampling, not universal presets:

Parameter ranges vary by model and endpoint. Some reasoning models restrict or reject temperature and top_p. Check the selected model’s documentation rather than assuming every OpenAI-compatible request supports identical controls.

Troubleshooting: My answers keep changing

First, freeze the inputs: model identifier, system instructions, conversation history, tools, and sampling settings. A changed tool result or reordered context can change the answer even when the user’s question stays identical.

Next, lower temperature if supported and run the same request several times. Compare task success, not just wording. For extraction, measure field accuracy; for coding, run tests; for support responses, check policy compliance.

Temperature 0 is not a reproducibility guarantee. Backend updates, numerical differences, and implementation details can still produce variation. If a seed parameter is supported, it may improve repeatability, but should not replace output validation.

Troubleshooting: Output is repetitive, dull, or unreliable

If answers feel repetitive, return top_p to its default before raising temperature slightly. Extremely restrictive sampling can reduce useful alternatives. Also inspect the prompt: repeated examples or rigid phrasing instructions can cause repetition independently of sampling.

If answers invent facts, lowering temperature may reduce variation but will not supply missing evidence. Provide source material, require uncertainty statements, and verify important claims. For malformed JSON, use structured outputs or schema constraints where supported, plus application-side validation and bounded retries.

Troubleshooting: The API rejects my settings

FAQ: Do sampling settings lower API costs?

Not directly. Temperature and top_p do not usually change the per-token price, but they can affect response length and retry rates. Better prompts, appropriate output limits, and fewer failed generations are more dependable cost controls.

59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without model downgrades. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it practical for testing model choices without rebuilding your application.
