Temperature vs. Top_p: A Developer’s Sampling Guide

入门教程 · EN · 2026-10-22

Start Here: Change One Sampling Setting

Temperature and top_p control how a language model chooses its next token. They influence variation, not knowledge. For a busy developer, the fastest starting point is simple: keep the model’s defaults, build a small evaluation set, and adjust one supported sampling parameter at a time.

If your model supports both controls, try temperature 0.2 for extraction or classification and 0.7 for drafting, leaving top_p at 1. These are starting points, not universal best settings. Some models restrict or omit sampling controls, so check the selected model’s parameter support first.

How Sampling Actually Works

At each generation step, the model produces scores called logits for possible next tokens. Those scores become a probability distribution. Sampling selects a token from that distribution, appends it to the response, and repeats. Tokens can be words, word fragments, punctuation, or other text units.

This explains why identical requests can produce different answers: several next tokens may be plausible. Sampling parameters change their relative likelihood or remove candidates before selection. They do not directly set factual accuracy, reasoning depth, response length, or whether an answer follows your schema.

Temperature: Sharpen or Flatten the Distribution

Temperature rescales token logits before they become probabilities. Lower values make high-scoring tokens more dominant; higher values spread probability more evenly, giving less likely tokens a better chance.

Where supported, temperature 0 generally requests greedy or near-greedy selection. It does not guarantee identical responses across runs: backend changes, numerical behavior, and model updates can still introduce differences. Also, lowering temperature cannot make a confidently wrong answer correct.

Top_p: Keep a Probability-Based Shortlist

Top_p, also called nucleus sampling, keeps the smallest set of highest-probability tokens whose cumulative probability reaches the chosen threshold. Sampling then happens within that retained set.

Imagine four candidate tokens with probabilities of 50%, 30%, 15%, and 5%. At top_p 0.8, the first two reach 80%, so the other two are excluded. At top_p 0.95, the first three remain. This shortlist changes at every generation step.

Top_p is not the same as top_k, which limits the number of candidates. Top_p 1 applies no nucleus cutoff. Lower values narrow the candidate pool, but extremely restrictive settings can produce repetitive or awkward text. Temperature and top_p can interact, and their exact processing order depends on the implementation.

A Five-Minute API Setup

Test Quality Before Tuning Further

Run 20 representative prompts three times each. Compare defaults against one alternative configuration. For extraction, measure valid structured output and field accuracy. For coding, run tests. For writing, review factuality and variation. Record the model ID, parameters, prompt version, latency, and token usage.

Use structured-output features where available for schema requirements, and validate results in your application. Sampling settings are not substitutes for validation or safety checks.

Keep Experiments Affordable

59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality GPT and Claude models without downgrading them, with compatibility for OpenAI SDKs, Claude Code, and Codex. That makes repeated sampling experiments easier to budget. Compare total token costs, not just request counts; output length also affects spending. A referral rebate offers another potential saving.

If you want to test these settings economically, consider signing up for 59API and starting with a small evaluation batch.
