Switch Claude and GPT Models Without Rewriting Code

Use One Client and Make the Model Configurable

Supporting multiple AI models does not need to mean maintaining separate Anthropic and OpenAI code paths. If your application uses the OpenAI SDK request format, you can centralize the API client, put the model ID in an environment variable, and switch providers or model families without changing your business logic.

59API makes this especially practical because it provides OpenAI SDK-compatible access to Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, so your app can send a familiar chat-completions request while choosing the model at deployment time. That is useful when you need a faster model for routine tasks, a stronger reasoning model for difficult work, or a low-cost fallback for high-volume traffic.

Step 1: Install the OpenAI SDK

In a Node.js project, install the standard SDK you may already use for OpenAI-compatible APIs:

npm install openai

Next, create a .env file. Keep the API key and selected model outside your source code. Use the exact model IDs shown in your 59API dashboard, since available model aliases can change over time.

API_KEY=your_59api_key
AI_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com
AI_MODEL=your_selected_sonnet_model_id

The important design decision is that AI_MODEL is configuration, not application code. Your support bot, document summarizer, or internal coding assistant should not need to know whether it is currently using a Claude or GPT model.

Step 2: Build a Provider-Neutral Chat Function

Create a single function that accepts messages and sends them through the OpenAI-compatible client:

import OpenAI from "openai";

const client = new OpenAI({
  apiKey: process.env.API_KEY,
  baseURL: process.env.AI_BASE_URL
});

export async function askModel(messages) {
  const response = await client.chat.completions.create({
    model: process.env.AI_MODEL,
    messages,
    temperature: 0.2,
    max_tokens: 700
  });

  return response.choices[0].message.content;
}

Now call that function from the rest of your application:

const answer = await askModel([
  { role: "system", content: "You are a concise technical support assistant." },
  { role: "user", content: "Explain how to reset an API key." }
]);

console.log(answer);

Your application code has one API client, one message format, and one response-handling path. The selected model is the only variable.

Step 3: Switch Models with a Deployment Change

To test a GPT model instead of the Claude Sonnet model, change only the environment value:

AI_MODEL=your_selected_gpt_model_id

Restart the service or redeploy it. No imports change, no prompt conversion is required, and no new provider-specific client needs to be added. This approach is also safer for staged rollouts: assign a new model to a preview environment first, run your evaluation prompts, then promote that same configuration to production.

Step 4: Evaluate More Than Just Output Quality

A model switch should be measured, not guessed. Save 20 to 50 representative requests from your real workload, removing sensitive customer data. For each candidate model, record response quality, latency, token use, and failure rate. Also test the exact capabilities your product depends on, such as structured output, multilingual replies, long-context summarization, or tool calling.

Why 59API Fits This Pattern

59API is a strong low-cost choice when you want native, official-quality Claude and GPT model access without maintaining multiple integrations. Its pay-as-you-go pricing is well suited to teams that want to experiment with different model tiers before committing traffic to one option. You can route a low-risk workload to an economical model, reserve premium capacity for difficult requests, and retain the same integration surface throughout.

If you share 59API with other developers, its referral rebate can also reduce ongoing usage costs. Sign up for 59API, create a key, and start with one configurable model variable; it is one of the simplest ways to make your AI stack flexible without rewriting your integration every time model requirements change.
