Switch AI Models Without Rewriting Your API
Changing AI providers often becomes an integration project: authentication changes, endpoint changes, response formats, and new environment variables can affect production code. A cleaner approach is to keep your application pointed at one OpenAI-compatible API and treat the model name as configuration.
This tutorial shows how to switch between Claude and GPT models through 59API without rewriting your core integration. 59API uses the base URL https://api.59api.com, provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality models, and can reduce costs when you need to test several models or scale usage gradually.
1. Find the model identifiers
Sign in to 59API and open the model list or dashboard. Copy the exact identifier for the model you want to use, such as a Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, or Fable model, or a supported GPT model. Model identifiers can change as providers release new versions, so use the current value shown in your account instead of guessing a name.
Store the identifier in an environment variable. For example, set AI_MODEL to your selected Claude or GPT model. This keeps a model change out of your application logic.
2. Configure the shared API endpoint
Create an API key in 59API, then configure your application with these values:
- Base URL: https://api.59api.com
- API key: your 59API key
- Model: the exact identifier copied from the 59API dashboard
Keep the key in a secret manager or an environment file excluded from version control. Do not place it in browser code, a mobile application, or a public repository.
3. Update an OpenAI SDK integration
If your application already uses an OpenAI SDK, the main change is the client configuration. Set the SDK base URL to https://api.59api.com and pass the 59API key as the API key. Leave your existing message construction, streaming logic, retries, and response handling in place.
For a typical chat request, use the value of AI_MODEL in the request's model field. Switching from a fast, economical model to a more capable model then requires changing one environment variable, followed by an application restart or deployment. The same pattern works with OpenAI-compatible libraries in Python, JavaScript, Go, and other languages.
4. Use the same approach with Codex
Configure Codex to use the 59API base URL and your 59API key through the settings or environment variables supported by your installation. Select the desired GPT-compatible model in the model setting. Because the endpoint remains OpenAI-compatible, your workflow, project files, and coding prompts do not need to be rewritten.
Test a small request first, then run a normal coding task. Check that authentication succeeds, tool calls behave as expected, and the selected model supports the capabilities your workflow requires.
5. Configure Claude Code
For Claude Code, set its supported API base URL setting to https://api.59api.com and provide the 59API key through the corresponding authentication variable or configuration entry. Select the Claude model identifier from your 59API dashboard. Start a new session after changing the settings so the client loads the new model and endpoint.
Begin with a read-only task, such as asking the assistant to inspect a project and suggest a change. This confirms connectivity before you allow edits or longer-running commands.
6. Add a controlled model switch
Use separate deployment variables for development, staging, and production. For example, staging can use Haiku or another lower-cost model for routine tests, while production can use Sonnet or Opus for tasks that need deeper reasoning. Keep prompts and application behavior constant while comparing quality, latency, and cost.
Also verify token limits, streaming behavior, structured output, and tool support for each model before switching production traffic. A compatible endpoint does not mean every model has identical capabilities.
7. Monitor and optimize
Track request errors, latency, token usage, and user-visible quality after each change. 59API's pay-as-you-go model lets you test alternatives without committing to a large contract, and its referral rebate can provide additional savings when eligible.
When you are ready to try a lower-cost route for your workload, sign up for 59API, create a key, and change the base URL and model variable in a test environment first. Your core integration can remain unchanged while you evaluate the right Claude or GPT model for each job.
