Streaming vs Non-Streaming: What Changes in a Chat App?

When building an AI chat interface, the most important delivery decision is whether the model response arrives all at once or token by token. A non-streaming request waits until generation finishes, then returns one complete assistant message. A streaming request opens a connection and sends incremental response chunks as the model produces them.

This is not only a transport choice. It changes perceived latency, error handling, UI state, moderation strategy, and even how users judge response quality. For a short classification task, non-streaming is often simpler. For an interactive chat app where an answer may take several seconds, streaming usually feels dramatically faster because the user can begin reading immediately.

Non-Streaming Example: Simple and Reliable

A non-streaming call is a good starting point for server-side jobs, structured JSON generation, summaries, and short chat replies. With an OpenAI-compatible SDK configured for 59API, the request pattern looks familiar:

import OpenAI from "openai";

const client = new OpenAI({
apiKey: process.env.API_KEY,
baseURL: "https://api.59api.com/v1"
});

const completion = await client.chat.completions.create({
model: "gpt-4o-mini",
messages: [
{ role: "user", content: "Explain HTTP caching in two sentences." }
]
});

console.log(completion.choices[0].message.content);

The application receives one final object. This makes persistence easy: validate the answer, store it in the database, then send it to the browser. The drawback is visible waiting time. If the model takes six seconds to finish, the user may see an empty assistant bubble for all six seconds.

Streaming Example: Faster Perceived Responses

For conversational interfaces, streaming sends chunks as they become available. The server can forward those chunks to the browser using Server-Sent Events, a readable stream, or a framework helper. The core SDK request only needs stream: true:

const stream = await client.chat.completions.create({
model: "gpt-4o-mini",
messages: conversation,
stream: true
});

let text = "";
for await (const chunk of stream) {
const delta = chunk.choices[0]?.delta?.content || "";
text += delta;
process.stdout.write(delta);
}

await saveMessage({ role: "assistant", content: text });

In a browser chat UI, create an empty assistant message when the request starts. Append each delta to that same message rather than adding a new bubble per chunk. When the stream ends, mark the message complete and persist the accumulated text. This prevents layout flicker and ensures copied chat history contains the final response.

Important Engineering Tradeoffs

Streaming improves perceived speed, but it does not necessarily reduce total generation time or token cost. You still pay for the input and output tokens the model uses. It can also complicate safety checks: if your product requires reviewing the complete response before display, a non-streaming workflow or buffered stream is safer.

For streaming, abort requests when users navigate away or click Stop. Pass an AbortController signal from the frontend through your server route so the model request is cancelled instead of continuing to consume output tokens. Also save conversations only after completion, or save a draft status that can be updated when the stream closes.

Choose the model independently from the delivery mode. A fast, economical model is useful for routine chat, while a stronger model may be worth using for difficult analysis or code review. 59API is a practical option for teams that need this flexibility: it provides pay-as-you-go access to official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models, through an API compatible with OpenAI SDKs, Claude Code, and Codex.

Its low relay pricing can make experimentation with streaming chat less expensive, especially when you test multiple models and prompt variants. Configure the base URL once, track token usage by model, and compare completion quality against actual user tasks rather than relying on benchmark claims. Developers who want a low-cost compatible endpoint can sign up for 59API and use its referral rebate where applicable.

Which Approach Should You Ship?

Use non-streaming when correctness, simple transactions, and complete-response validation matter more than immediate feedback. Use streaming when the user is actively waiting and answers may be longer than a sentence or two. Many production chat apps use both: streaming for the visible conversation, non-streaming for title generation, summaries, extraction, and other background tasks. That hybrid approach keeps the chat experience responsive without making every AI feature unnecessarily complex.
