Stream Claude and GPT Responses Without Waiting
What Streaming Responses Means
Streaming lets an AI model send its answer incrementally instead of making your application wait for the complete response. In a chat interface, users see text appear token by token or phrase by phrase. This makes an application feel much faster, especially when a model is producing a long explanation, code file, or analysis.
Claude and GPT APIs commonly use Server-Sent Events (SSE) for streaming. SSE is a simple HTTP-based protocol: your client opens one request, then the server keeps that connection open and sends a sequence of events. Each event contains a small piece of model output, metadata, or a signal that generation has finished.
Why Streaming Matters for Beginners
Without streaming, a user might wait 10 or 20 seconds while your server receives the full answer. With streaming, the first visible text can arrive much sooner. You can also show useful interface states, such as “thinking,” a stop-generation control, or a live code preview.
Streaming does not usually reduce the number of generated tokens, so it is not primarily a cost-saving feature. It improves perceived performance and gives your application more control over how output is displayed. Cost still matters because interactive apps can create many requests, which is where a low-cost relay can be useful.
Start a Streaming Request
The exact request shape depends on the API family you use. For OpenAI-compatible GPT endpoints, enable streaming with the stream parameter set to true. In an official OpenAI SDK, this typically returns an asynchronous stream that you iterate over. Each chunk may include a small text delta, rather than the full assistant message.
For Claude’s Messages API, enable streaming with the stream parameter set to true. Claude sends named SSE events, including message-start events, content-block updates, text deltas, and a final message-stop event. Your application should append only the text-bearing deltas to the visible answer while retaining metadata separately.

Parse Chunks Safely
- Append deltas, not complete messages. A streamed chunk is often only the next fragment of text. Replacing the displayed answer on every event can make earlier content disappear.
- Handle empty chunks. Some events contain role information, usage data, tool-call data, or stop reasons instead of visible text.
- Wait for completion. Do not mark a response as finished until you receive the provider’s terminal event or completion marker. OpenAI-style SSE streams commonly end with a data marker such as [DONE].
- Keep partial output. If a connection drops, save the text already received and show a retry option. Do not silently discard a useful partial answer.
- Escape output in browsers. Render model text as text content, not raw HTML. This protects your users from accidental or malicious markup in generated output.
Support Cancellation and Errors
A production streaming experience needs an AbortController in browser JavaScript, or the equivalent cancellation mechanism in your server runtime. Connect your Stop button to that controller so users can end an overly long generation. On cancellation, preserve the partial response and label it clearly as stopped.
Also distinguish network failures, authentication failures, rate limits, and model-side errors. SSE responses can begin successfully and fail later, so wrap your stream-reading loop in error handling. Log the request ID, selected model, timing, and error category, but avoid logging sensitive prompts or user data unless you have a clear retention policy.
Choose Models and Control Spend
Use a fast, lower-cost model for routine chat, summaries, and simple extraction. Reserve stronger models such as Claude Opus or higher-capability GPT options for difficult reasoning, complex code changes, or tasks where quality materially affects the result. Limit max output tokens, cap conversation history, and summarize older turns to prevent context costs from growing unnoticed.
