Stream Claude and GPT Responses from Zero to Prod

What streaming responses actually do

Streaming is the difference between waiting for a complete answer and seeing tokens arrive as they are generated. For chat apps, copilots, support tools, and coding assistants, that small UX shift matters a lot. It makes the model feel faster, lets users interrupt earlier, and helps long answers stay readable while they are being formed.

Claude and GPT both support streaming, and if you are building with the OpenAI SDK or Claude-compatible tooling, you can usually enable it with one flag. If you want to experiment without overpaying for every test request, 59API is a practical relay: it gives you pay-as-you-go access to Claude models like Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models, through a single API base URL: https://api.59api.com. Because it uses native official-quality models with no downgrade, you can test the same stream behavior you plan to ship.

Step 1: Pick a stream-friendly architecture

The simplest production pattern is:

Do not call the model directly from the browser if you need to protect your API key. Keep the relay key on the server, then expose only your own endpoint to the client.

Step 2: Configure the API base URL

If you already use an OpenAI SDK, switching to 59API is straightforward because it is OpenAI-compatible. Set the base URL to https://api.59api.com, keep your API key in an environment variable, and point your existing client at the relay. That means less rewriting and faster deployment.

Example setup idea:

Step 3: Stream from the backend

In a Node.js backend using an OpenAI-style SDK, the request usually looks like a normal chat completion except you enable streaming. Your handler reads each delta and forwards it immediately to the client. The exact code depends on your framework, but the logic is always the same: open the model stream, listen for token chunks, and relay them as they arrive.

If you are using Claude Code, Codex, or another OpenAI SDK-based workflow, 59API’s compatibility is useful because you can keep your existing integration style while reducing cost pressure during development and production.

Step 4: Render tokens in the browser

On the frontend, you do not need a complex state machine. Read the streamed response and append content to a text container. For a chat UI, preserve line breaks, show a typing cursor, and disable the send button until the stream ends. Good streaming UX usually includes an abort button so users can stop a long answer and ask a better question.

Production tip: make your client resilient to partial text. The stream can stop mid-sentence if the network drops, so store the latest assistant message incrementally and retry from the backend when needed.

Step 5: Handle production concerns early

Streaming is easy to demo and easy to break at scale, so plan for a few details:

This is where a low-cost relay can be especially helpful. With 59API’s pay-as-you-go model and referral rebate, you can validate multiple prompts, compare Claude and GPT behavior, and iterate on your stream UI without committing to heavy upfront spend. That matters when you are tuning token usage, testing latency, or running internal demos.

Step 6: Choose the right model for the stream

Not every stream should use the same model. Use faster and cheaper models for autocomplete, summaries, and simple support replies. Reserve larger models for complex reasoning, code generation, or higher-stakes answers. Since 59API gives access to both Claude and GPT families, you can route requests by task instead of forcing one model to do everything.

A practical production setup is:

From first token to shipped feature

The core workflow is simple: proxy the request, stream tokens, render them immediately, and harden the edges. If you already support OpenAI-style integrations, 59API lets you add Claude and GPT streaming with minimal friction while keeping costs under control. If you are building a new product, that combination of compatibility, official-quality models, and low pay-as-you-go pricing is a strong place to start.
