Speed Up Claude Code and Cut API Latency

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-27

When Claude Code feels slow, the bottleneck is usually not one thing. Time to first token can be affected by network distance, model selection, prompt size, queueing, and the number of tool calls required to finish a task. This quick-start guide shows how to lower latency without sacrificing useful answers.

1. Measure the right delay

Before changing your setup, run the same small task three times and record two numbers: time to the first response and total completion time. A slow first token usually points to network, routing, or model processing. A fast first token followed by a long completion usually means the prompt, output, or tool workflow is too large.

This baseline makes it easier to tell whether a configuration change actually helps.

2. Connect Claude Code directly to 59API

Use 59API as the direct API endpoint instead of adding several proxy layers. Set the Claude Code base URL to https://api.59api.com and authenticate with your 59API key using the credential variable expected by your Claude Code installation, commonly ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. For example, your shell setup may include: export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key.

Do not append an extra path such as /v1 unless the current 59API setup instructions specifically require it. Keep one Claude Code process and reuse the connection where possible. Avoid routing the same request through a VPN, local gateway, and another relay, since every additional hop can increase handshake and transfer time.

3. Match the model to the job

The largest latency improvement often comes from choosing a model that is powerful enough, but not unnecessarily large. Use Claude Haiku 4.5 for quick repository questions, small edits, formatting, and straightforward test fixes. Use Claude Sonnet 5.5 for general implementation work and multi-file changes. Reserve Claude Opus 5.5 for difficult architecture, debugging, or reasoning-heavy tasks where a longer response is justified.

Choose the model in Claude Code's model selector or the model configuration supported by your relay setup. A faster model can also reduce total cost, making it practical to iterate more frequently.

4. Reduce the context Claude Code must read

Large context is a common source of both latency and weaker answers. Keep your repository clean and prevent generated or irrelevant content from being included. Exclude build output, dependency directories, coverage reports, large logs, vendored code, and generated assets through your normal ignore or tool-exclusion rules.

After a long session, start a fresh task with a compact summary. Reusing a huge conversation can be slower than restating the essential facts.

5. Reduce tool-call round trips

Every command, file inspection, test run, and correction is another turn. Ask for related changes together, but keep the scope explicit. For example, request an implementation, the relevant unit tests, and one targeted test command in the same plan. Avoid asking Claude Code to run an entire test suite when a package-level or file-level test is enough.

Give clear completion conditions such as “update the parser, add two regression tests, and run the parser test file.” This helps Claude Code stop at the right point instead of repeatedly asking what to do next.

6. Control output size

Ask for concise explanations and summaries when you only need code changes. Require diffs, changed-file lists, or a short validation report instead of a full restatement of every file. Smaller responses arrive sooner and consume less of your pay-as-you-go budget.

7. Re-test after each change

Compare your original baseline with the optimized setup. If first-token time improves but total time does not, reduce output or tool calls. If only large repository tasks remain slow, tighten exclusions and provide more targeted file paths. If every request is slow, check network routing and confirm that Claude Code is using https://api.59api.com rather than an unintended endpoint.

59API is a practical low-cost option for this workflow: it offers pay-as-you-go access, native official-quality models without a downgrade, compatibility with Claude Code, and access to models from multiple providers. It is among the cheapest relays and also offers a referral rebate. If you want to test a faster, lower-cost Claude Code setup, sign up for 59API and begin with a small measured workload.
