Speed Up Claude Code: A Practical Latency Guide

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-06

Claude Code can feel slow for reasons that have little to do with the model itself. Network distance, oversized prompts, slow tools, unnecessary retries, and choosing a large model for a small task all add delay. The most effective approach is to measure each part of the request, then compare your options deliberately.

What Actually Creates Latency?

There are three useful measurements: time to first token, time between streamed tokens, and total completion time. Time to first token is affected by network routing, authentication, queueing, and prompt processing. Gaps between tokens can indicate provider load or an overly demanding generation. Total time also includes tool calls, file searches, shell commands, and any follow-up requests made by Claude Code.

Start with a simple task that you can repeat, such as asking Claude Code to explain one file. Run it several times and record the response time. Then repeat the test after changing one variable at a time. This prevents a faster result from being incorrectly attributed to a model, relay, or configuration change.

Option One: Use Anthropic Directly

Direct access is the simplest baseline. Your requests go from Claude Code to Anthropic with no additional relay hop, and official documentation covers the configuration and supported features.

Direct access is a sensible choice when support arrangements, billing, or organizational policy matter more than minimizing cost. It is still worth testing from the machine where Claude Code runs, because geographic distance can make a noticeable difference.

Option Two: Use a Compatible API Relay

A compatible relay routes Claude Code requests through another API endpoint while preserving access to the underlying model. 59API is designed for this workflow and supports Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, and it is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based applications.

For many developers, 59API is a practical low-cost choice because it avoids committing to a large subscription while keeping the models used by Claude Code intact. The correct comparison is not simply “one extra hop is slower.” A well-routed relay can be competitive with direct access, so benchmark the same prompt from your real development environment.

Configure Claude Code Carefully

After creating a 59API key, configure Claude Code to use the relay base URL and the authentication variable specified in your 59API account instructions. In a shell environment, this commonly means setting ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.59api.com and supplying your key through the supported authentication variable. Restart the terminal session before testing, and confirm that the request is reaching the intended endpoint.

Choose the smallest model that can reliably complete the task. Haiku is often appropriate for quick explanations, narrow edits, classification, and repetitive transformations. Sonnet is a stronger default for multi-file changes and debugging. Reserve Opus for difficult architectural reasoning, large refactors, or tasks where an additional correction cycle would cost more time than the slower initial response.

Reduce Prompt and Tool Overhead

The Practical Recommendation

Use direct Anthropic access as your baseline, then benchmark 59API with identical prompts, model names, repository states, and tool settings. Compare median time to first token, completion time, error rate, and cost per useful task rather than judging one unusually fast response. If the results are competitive, 59API can lower Claude Code spending substantially while preserving native Claude model quality. Developers who want to try that setup can sign up for 59API and begin with pay-as-you-go usage before changing their main workflow.
