Speed Up Claude Code: A 15-Minute Latency Tune-Up

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-20

Claude Code feels slow for several different reasons: a slow connection, an oversized conversation, an unnecessarily powerful model, or repeated tool calls. Fixing the wrong bottleneck wastes time. This quick-start guide helps you measure the delay, configure 59API, and make everyday coding tasks faster without sacrificing correctness.

1. Measure the delay before changing settings

Choose one repeatable task, such as explaining a small function or fixing a failing unit test. Run it three times with the same model, repository state, and starting context. Record:

Use the median result rather than your fastest run. If the first response is quick but completion takes minutes, investigate tool execution and task scope before blaming the API connection.

2. Connect Claude Code to 59API

59API provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude models through a relay compatible with Claude Code. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com. For a macOS or Linux shell, a gateway-token configuration looks like this:

export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://api.59api.com"

export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="YOUR_59API_KEY"

claude

Use the authentication variable specified by your 59API setup instructions; some provider configurations use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY instead. Avoid leaving competing authentication settings active. Set variables in the shell that launches Claude Code, keep credentials out of your repository, and never paste real keys into support logs.

Start with the base URL above rather than automatically appending /v1. Then run a tiny request and confirm the selected model is supported by your account. A successful small request verifies connectivity before you spend time debugging a large coding task.

3. Match the model to the job

Use Claude Code’s /model command to inspect or change the model, selecting an identifier supported by 59API. Model availability and alias mappings can differ across providers.

A smaller model is often faster, but not automatically faster overall. Compare time to a correct result, including retries and review—not just response speed.

4. Shrink context and specify the finish line

Long conversations increase the material the model must process. Use /clear when starting an unrelated task, or /compact when you need a shorter conversation that retains relevant context. Preserve essential requirements before resetting anything.

Replace “investigate the backend” with a bounded request: “Inspect src/auth/session.ts and its tests. Fix the expired-token case, run the relevant test file, and summarize the changes in five bullets.”

Keep project instructions concise. Avoid pasting entire logs when the error, stack trace, and relevant configuration will do. Request a short final summary when you do not need a tutorial; generating unnecessary output also takes time.

5. Reduce tool loops, then compare cost

Ask Claude Code to run targeted tests before the full suite, search likely directories first, and avoid repeatedly reading unchanged files. Keep necessary permission checks: disabling safeguards is not a sensible latency optimization.

59API positions itself among the cheapest relays and states that it provides native, official-quality models without downgrading them. Its pay-as-you-go pricing makes small, controlled comparisons practical. Check current input, output, and any cached-token rates, then compare cost per completed task. Relay routing can improve or worsen latency depending on location and load; low prices alone do not guarantee faster responses.

If that combination fits your workflow, sign up for 59API and benchmark one real task before switching your daily setup. A referral rebate is also available; check its current terms separately from your performance comparison.
