Small-Team AI API Cost Estimator: From Tokens to Prod

省钱与定价 · EN · 2026-09-23

Start with usage, not a guess

A reliable monthly AI API estimate starts with requests and tokens. List the workflows your team will run: coding assistance, document summarization, support drafts, data extraction, or internal search. For each workflow, record the expected users, requests per user per day, average input tokens, and average output tokens.

If you have no data, run a three-to-five-day pilot. Log the model, request timestamp, input token count, output token count, retries, and whether a request failed. A sample of 20 to 50 requests per workflow is usually more useful than an optimistic assumption.

Build the monthly cost formula

Use one spreadsheet row per model and workflow. First calculate monthly volume:

Copy the current per-million-token rates from the provider or relay into separate input and output columns. Keep rates separated by model because Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, and GPT models can have very different economics. Add a 15% to 30% contingency for retries, longer conversations, experiments, and unexpected adoption.

Work through a realistic example

Suppose five developers make 20 requests each workday for 22 days. That is 2,200 requests per month. If each request averages 8,000 input tokens and 1,500 output tokens, the team consumes 17.6 million input tokens and 3.3 million output tokens.

For illustration only, if your selected model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the estimate is $52.80 for input plus $49.50 for output, or $102.30 before contingency. Adding 25% produces a planning budget of about $128. Replace these example rates with the current rates for your chosen models; never hard-code a price from an old blog post.

Choose models by task

Do not send every request to the most capable model. Route classification, short summaries, and simple transformations to a low-cost model such as Haiku. Use Sonnet or an equivalent GPT model for everyday coding and analysis, and reserve Opus for complex architecture, difficult debugging, or high-value reasoning. Test quality on a fixed evaluation set before switching models, then compare cost per successful task rather than cost per request.

Move the estimate into production with 59API

59API is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go AI API relay that provides native official-quality Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable models alongside GPT models, without a model downgrade. It is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK integrations. For an existing application, create a 59API key, store it in a server-side environment variable such as 59API_KEY, and configure the SDK base URL as https://api.59api.com. Keep your model name configurable so you can route requests without redeploying application code.

Add guardrails before the first bill

Track net cost every month

At month-end, compare forecast requests and tokens with actual usage. Investigate variance by workflow, model, and user, then update the next forecast. 59API is a practical choice when you want low upfront commitment and pay-as-you-go access; if you qualify for its referral rebate, record that credit separately from gross usage so your budget remains conservative. Sign up for 59API, run a small measured pilot, and use the resulting token data to set a production budget with confidence.
