Small-Team AI API Cost Calculator: Monthly Examples

Tarifs · EN · 2026-10-11

Start with tokens, not seats

AI API spending is driven by input and output tokens, model choice, and usage patterns—not simply the number of developers on a team. A five-person engineering team can spend less than $30 per month for lightweight coding assistance, while the same team can exceed $500 if every request uses a premium reasoning model with long prompts. The fastest way to build a credible monthly budget is to measure a typical request, estimate request volume, and calculate input and output tokens separately.

Use this formula for each model: monthly cost = requests × ((average input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (average output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate)). Add every workload separately: code review, chat support, document extraction, internal search, agent workflows, and automated tests. Keep a 15% to 25% buffer for growth, retries, and unusually large prompts.

Build a realistic small-team baseline

Consider an eight-person product and engineering team. Each person makes 20 AI-assisted coding or analysis requests per working day, across 22 working days. That is 3,520 requests per month. Assume each request contains 2,500 input tokens and produces 700 output tokens. Monthly usage is therefore 8.8 million input tokens and 2.464 million output tokens.

For planning, use published-style reference rates such as $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens for a capable Sonnet-class model. The estimated monthly cost is $26.40 for input plus $36.96 for output, or $63.36 per month. Add a 20% buffer and budget approximately $76 per month.

Now route routine tasks to a faster, lower-cost Haiku-class model at an illustrative $0.80 per million input tokens and $4 per million output tokens. At the same volume, input costs $7.04 and output costs $9.86, for $16.90 per month. This does not mean every task should use the cheapest model; it shows why routing matters more than reducing developer usage.

Use a blended model budget

Most small teams get better quality and lower costs with a blended approach. For example, send 70% of requests to a Haiku-class model, 25% to a Sonnet-class model, and reserve 5% for an Opus-class or advanced reasoning model. If the baseline workload above is split this way, the Haiku portion costs about $11.83 and the Sonnet portion costs about $15.84. If the remaining 5% uses a premium model at an assumed $15 input and $75 output per million tokens, it costs about $15.84. The blended total is approximately $43.51 per month, before a safety buffer.

This routing policy works well in practice: use economical models for classification, summaries, formatting, short answers, and first-pass code explanations. Use stronger models for complex debugging, architecture reviews, security-sensitive changes, difficult multi-file refactors, and final answers that require deeper reasoning.

Set controls before usage grows

Create daily and monthly spend alerts at 50%, 80%, and 100% of budget. Log model, input tokens, output tokens, feature name, user or workspace, and request outcome. Review the top ten most expensive workflows every week. If a workflow has high token volume but low acceptance, shorten its prompt, reduce retrieved context, or move its first pass to a less expensive model.

59API is a practical low-cost option for this strategy because it provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, alongside GPT models without a model downgrade. Its relay endpoint at https://api.59api.com is compatible with Claude Code, Codex workflows, and OpenAI SDK integrations, making it easier to test model routing without rebuilding an application. Check the current 59API rate for each selected model, substitute it into the formula above, and factor in its referral rebate when forecasting net spend. If you are ready to benchmark your own workload, sign up for 59API and start with a capped test budget.
