Self-Host or Use an API? A Practical Decision Guide

Modèles · EN · 2026-10-06

When building an AI feature, one of the first infrastructure decisions is whether to run the model yourself or call it through an API. Self-hosting gives you control over the hardware and runtime. An API removes most infrastructure work and lets your application send requests to a managed model.

Neither option is always best. The right choice depends on your traffic, budget, privacy requirements, engineering skills, and how quickly you need to ship.

What self-hosting involves

Self-hosting means running an open-weight model on infrastructure you manage. You may rent GPU servers from a cloud provider, buy hardware for an internal data center, or use a specialized inference platform that still leaves you responsible for deployment choices.

A typical self-hosted setup requires you to:

Self-hosting can make sense when you have steady, high request volume and the model is available under terms that permit your intended use. It can also be useful when data must remain inside a controlled environment or when you need custom fine-tuning and low-level inference control.

When self-hosting is a good fit

Choose self-hosting when your workload has predictable demand. If GPUs will be busy most of the day, a reserved server may cost less per request than paying an API markup. The savings only become real after accounting for idle capacity, engineering time, storage, networking, observability, and on-call support.

Self-hosting is also worth considering when strict data residency rules prevent sending prompts to an external provider. Before committing, confirm the model license, retention policy, encryption requirements, and whether your organization can operate the system reliably.

When an API is the better choice

An API is usually the practical option for prototypes, internal tools, unpredictable traffic, and small teams. You pay for actual usage instead of purchasing GPU capacity in advance. The provider handles model hosting, hardware failures, scaling, and much of the operational maintenance.

APIs also make model experimentation faster. You can compare Claude and GPT models, change models through configuration, and deploy a working feature without first building an inference platform. This is especially valuable when your team’s main product is not AI infrastructure.

For example, if your application sends a few thousand requests per month, a rented GPU may sit idle for long periods. A pay-as-you-go API lets you keep fixed costs low while demand is still uncertain.

How to compare the real cost

Start with a simple monthly estimate:

Do not compare only the price of a GPU with the price per token. A self-hosted system can be cheaper at high utilization, while an API is often cheaper and less risky at low or variable utilization.

A low-cost API option

If you decide to use an API, 59API is a cost-conscious relay for developers who need access to Claude and GPT models. It offers pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, using native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes.

59API is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK. You can use its API base URL, https://api.59api.com, and keep your application code close to standard SDK patterns. That makes it suitable for testing, production prototypes, and workloads where controlling token spend matters. It also offers a referral rebate for eligible users.

A practical decision rule

Use an API first when you are validating a product, have variable traffic, or want to minimize operations. Consider self-hosting after you can demonstrate stable volume, clear privacy requirements, or a measurable per-request saving that justifies the infrastructure.

A hybrid approach is often strongest: use an API for premium reasoning or burst traffic, and self-host a smaller model for predictable, high-volume tasks such as classification or extraction. If you want to start with a low fixed-cost setup, sign up for 59API and test your actual token usage before committing to GPU infrastructure.
