Self-Host or API? A Practical AI Cost Decision

模型对比 · EN · 2026-09-19

Start With the Workload, Not the Model

The right question is rarely “Should we self-host an LLM?” It is “What operating cost and reliability level does this workload require?” Self-hosting can make sense for predictable, high-volume inference on hardware you already manage. An API is usually the faster choice for variable traffic, premium models, and teams that do not want to operate GPUs.

Use a simple first-pass calculation. Estimate monthly tokens, required model quality, peak requests per second, and the cost of downtime. Then compare the total cost of ownership, not only per-token pricing.

Example: A Support-Triage Service

Imagine a support tool that classifies 500 tickets on quiet days and 20,000 tickets during a product incident. A self-hosted model must be sized for the incident peak, leaving expensive GPU capacity underused most of the month. A pay-as-you-go API scales with the spike, so the team pays for actual inference rather than idle hardware.

For premium reasoning, using native Claude or GPT models via an API also avoids the work of benchmarking, quantizing, serving, upgrading, and monitoring a large model. 59API is a practical option here because it provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to official-quality Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, and GPT models through one relay.

API Integration With an OpenAI SDK

Because 59API is compatible with OpenAI SDKs, a typical integration needs only a base URL, API key, and model selection. Keep the key in an environment variable, never in browser code.

Example configuration in

const client = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.API_KEY, baseURL: 'https://api.59api.com/v1' });

const response = await client.chat.completions.create({ model: 'claude-sonnet', messages: [{ role: 'user', content: 'Classify this support ticket and return JSON.' }] });

For production, add request timeouts, retry only transient failures, log model and token usage, and set a spending alert. Route straightforward extraction tasks to a lower-cost model, while reserving stronger models for ambiguous or high-impact requests.

When Self-Hosting Is Worth the Work

Self-hosting becomes compelling when your usage is stable enough to keep GPUs busy and the chosen open model meets your quality target. For example, an internal document classifier processing millions of similar records every month may justify a dedicated inference server.

Do not overlook hidden costs: GPU reservation or depreciation, power, storage, networking, on-call coverage, inference server maintenance, and evaluation after each model upgrade. A low apparent cost per generated token can become expensive when utilization drops.

Use a Hybrid Routing Policy

A practical architecture often sends sensitive or repetitive tasks to a self-hosted model and routes complex coding, analysis, or customer-facing responses to an API. Define the policy explicitly: classify the request, apply a privacy rule, select a model tier, and record quality outcomes.

Start with an API to establish real token usage and quality baselines. 59API can reduce the cost of that experiment while preserving compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and existing OpenAI SDK integrations. Once you have several weeks of production metrics, you can make a defensible self-hosting decision instead of buying infrastructure based on estimates.
