Running Codex and Claude Code Side by Side in 2026

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-18

Running Codex and Claude Code side by side can make software work faster when each agent has a clear role. Codex is useful for repository-wide reasoning, implementation, and structured changes, while Claude Code is often strong at exploring unfamiliar code, reviewing edge cases, and turning a rough requirement into a practical plan. The best 2026 workflow treats them as collaborating engineers with separate terminals, shared source control, and explicit boundaries.

Set up isolated working environments

Start by creating a clean Git branch or separate worktree for each agent. A worktree lets both tools use the same repository without writing into the same checkout:

git worktree add ../project-codex -b codex-task

git worktree add ../project-claude -b claude-review

Open one terminal in each directory. Give Codex the implementation task and ask Claude Code to investigate the existing design, identify risks, or prepare tests. If both agents must edit files, assign ownership by directory or worktree. Avoid asking them to modify the same files simultaneously, because their changes can conflict even when both solutions look reasonable.

Configure both tools through 59API

59API provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, alongside GPT models through a single relay. Its OpenAI-compatible endpoint is https://api.59api.com, making it practical for teams that want to test different coding agents without maintaining separate infrastructure.

For Claude Code, configure the relay URL and your 59API credential in the environment used by the terminal. The typical variables are ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key. For Codex or another OpenAI SDK client, use OPENAI_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and OPENAI_API_KEY=your_59api_key when supported by your installed version. Keep credentials in a local environment file or your shell's secret store, and never commit them to Git.

CLI configuration names can change between releases, so verify the current Codex and Claude Code help output after installation. The important settings are the provider base URL, API key, selected model, and any request or usage limits.

Give each agent a focused job

A useful handoff includes the goal, affected files, constraints, acceptance criteria, and commands that must pass. After Codex finishes, give Claude Code the commit hash or a short diff summary and ask for a review. After Claude Code reports an issue, let Codex address that issue in its own branch. This creates a review loop instead of two agents making uncoordinated edits.

Control quality and spending

Choose models by task rather than using the most expensive option everywhere. Use Haiku or a smaller GPT model for repository searches, summaries, and routine checks. Reserve Sonnet, Opus, or a stronger GPT model for complex refactors, debugging, and architectural decisions. Pin model names in project configuration where possible so a model change does not silently alter results.

Set token, request, or daily spending limits in your relay account, and inspect usage after the first few sessions. 59API is designed as a low-cost relay with native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes, so it can reduce experimentation costs while preserving access to the models your workflow requires. Its referral rebate can also lower the effective cost for developers who invite teammates.

Use a repeatable side-by-side routine

Begin with Claude Code exploring the task and listing risks. Have Codex implement the agreed plan in its worktree. Run tests locally, then ask Claude Code to review the diff against the acceptance criteria. Resolve findings, run formatting, type checks, and tests again, and merge the smallest complete change. If you want an inexpensive way to try this workflow, sign up for 59API, add its base URL to both tools, and begin with a small repository task before expanding to larger changes.
