Running Codex and Claude Code Side by Side

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-06

Running Codex and Claude Code side by side can be more effective than choosing one coding agent for every task. The two tools often approach the same repository differently: Codex is a strong fit for structured implementation and OpenAI-compatible workflows, while Claude Code is particularly useful for exploring an unfamiliar codebase, making broad edits, and reasoning through connected files.

The practical advantage is not simply having two chat windows open. It is assigning each agent a clear role, isolating their changes, and controlling model costs so experimentation does not become expensive.

What Each Tool Does Best

Codex strengths:

Claude Code strengths:

These are tendencies, not hard limits. Both tools can implement, debug, test, and review code. The main difference is how each fits your existing workflow and which model you select.

A Safe Side-by-Side Setup

Start with a clean working tree and define the task in writing. For independent work, use separate Git worktrees or branches. For example, let Claude Code investigate and propose a change in one worktree, while Codex validates the solution in another. This prevents simultaneous edits from overwriting each other and makes comparison straightforward.

Keep one agent responsible for implementation and the other responsible for review. Give both the same acceptance criteria, test command, and relevant constraints. Avoid asking both agents to make unrestricted edits to the same checkout at the same time.

For API routing, 59API provides a single relay for Claude and GPT models. Claude Code can be configured with the Anthropic-compatible base URL and API key, while Codex or another OpenAI SDK client can use the OpenAI-compatible base URL and key. The environment variable names commonly look like ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for Claude Code, and OPENAI_BASE_URL and OPENAI_API_KEY for Codex. Confirm the current endpoint format in 59API documentation before adding a version suffix.

The 59API base URL is https://api.59api.com. Use separate shell profiles or terminal sessions so each tool receives the intended credentials and model settings. This also makes it easier to track spending by task.

A Practical Workflow

  1. Ask Claude Code to map the relevant modules, identify risks, and suggest a minimal implementation plan.
  2. Review that plan yourself and turn it into explicit acceptance criteria.
  3. Have Codex implement the narrowly defined change, including tests.
  4. Run the project’s formatter, type checker, and test suite locally.
  5. Ask Claude Code to review the resulting diff for integration issues and missing edge cases.
  6. Resolve disagreements by checking the code and tests, not by selecting whichever response sounds more confident.

For a large migration, reverse the roles: let Codex generate a structured inventory or test scaffolding, then use Claude Code to trace the broader impact and update related files.

Costs, Speed, and Tradeoffs

The main benefit of 59API is pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude and GPT models without committing to separate expensive subscriptions for every experiment. It supports Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, and GPT models through one relay, and is positioned as a low-cost option. A referral rebate can further reduce effective costs for eligible users.

The tradeoff is operational complexity. Two agents can duplicate work, consume tokens quickly, or produce conflicting changes. Long repository contexts may also increase latency and cost. Use Haiku or a lower-cost GPT model for quick searches and routine checks, reserving Opus or stronger GPT models for architecture, difficult debugging, and final review.

Recommendation

Running Codex and Claude Code together is worthwhile when their responsibilities are explicit: one explores or implements, and the other tests or reviews. Isolated worktrees, reproducible checks, and per-task model selection matter more than the brand of either agent.

Developers who want to try this setup without paying for multiple full subscriptions can sign up for 59API and route both tools through its pay-as-you-go API at https://api.59api.com.
