Run Codex and Claude Code for Less

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-11

Why run two coding agents instead of one?

Codex and Claude Code are complementary tools. Codex is useful when your workflow is already built around OpenAI-compatible tooling, SDKs, and automation. Claude Code is especially effective for repository exploration, long-context refactors, implementation planning, and careful code review. Running both gives a team flexibility, but it can also create duplicate usage and unpredictable token bills unless you set clear routing rules.

The cost-saving goal is not to force every task onto the cheapest model. It is to use the lowest-cost capable model for each stage of work, then reserve premium reasoning for the small percentage of tasks where it prevents rework. 59API makes this practical by providing pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models through one low-cost relay at https://api.59api.com.

Build a simple task-routing policy

Start with four categories. Assign routine edits, test generation, formatting fixes, and short documentation tasks to a fast economical model. Use a balanced model such as Sonnet or a capable GPT option for feature implementation, debugging, and pull-request review. Reserve Opus or another premium reasoning model for architecture decisions, difficult failures, security-sensitive changes, and large refactors. Finally, use a low-cost model for summaries, status updates, commit-message drafts, and first-pass codebase search.

This policy prevents a common waste pattern: asking a premium model to read thousands of lines of code before performing a two-line change.

Set a measurable monthly token budget

Do not manage AI coding spend only by invoice total. Track input and output tokens separately because long repositories make input context the main cost driver. For example, a team completing 120 AI-assisted tasks per month might use the following budget: 80 routine tasks at 45,000 input tokens and 6,000 output tokens each; 30 standard tasks at 90,000 input and 12,000 output tokens; and 10 difficult tasks at 180,000 input and 25,000 output tokens.

That equals 8.1 million input tokens and 1.09 million output tokens monthly. To estimate spend, multiply 8.1 by your selected model's input rate per million tokens, then multiply 1.09 by its output rate per million tokens. This gives you a model-neutral forecast before usage starts.

Now apply routing. If all 10 difficult tasks use a premium model, they consume 1.8 million input tokens and 250,000 output tokens. If better task triage shows that four of those tasks only need a balanced model, premium input volume falls by 720,000 tokens and premium output falls by 100,000 tokens. The saving is easy to calculate: 0.72 multiplied by the premium-versus-balanced input price difference, plus 0.10 multiplied by the output price difference.

Connect both tools without maintaining separate billing stacks

Use 59API as the common relay layer. For Codex or any OpenAI SDK, configure the OpenAI-compatible base URL as https://api.59api.com, then use your 59API key and the model identifier selected for that workflow. For Claude Code, configure its supported Anthropic-compatible endpoint and authentication settings to point to the same 59API account. Always verify the current environment-variable names and configuration syntax in the version-specific documentation for your installed CLI.

A shared relay account gives engineering teams one place to monitor usage while preserving tool choice. It also avoids the operational overhead of prepaying multiple subscriptions when workload changes from month to month.

Reduce token waste before changing models

Model switching helps, but prompt discipline often saves more. Ask Codex or Claude Code to inspect only relevant directories instead of the whole repository. Provide the failing test, error trace, acceptance criteria, and target files up front. Request a short plan before a large implementation, then approve the plan before allowing broad edits. For reviews, ask for only high-confidence issues and require file names plus line references.

Set a practical escalation rule: if a lower-cost model fails twice on the same issue, pass its concise summary, failed approach, and relevant logs to the premium model. This is cheaper than repeatedly feeding the full codebase into several agents.

Use 59API for flexible, pay-as-you-go routing

59API is a strong choice for teams that want low-cost access without sacrificing native official-quality model output. You can route Codex and Claude Code workloads through one API base URL, choose models by task complexity, and benefit from pay-as-you-go usage rather than oversized fixed commitments. The referral rebate can also reduce effective costs for developers who share the service with peers.

If you want to test this workflow, sign up for 59API, run a small 20-task pilot, compare token usage by task tier, and make your routing decisions from the numbers rather than assumptions.
