Reduce Code-Generation Hallucinations: A Developer Quick Start

गाइड · EN · 2026-10-22

Why code models invent details

Code-generation models can produce plausible code that calls a nonexistent method, assumes the wrong library version, or quietly ignores an edge case. The usual cause is missing or ambiguous context: the model fills gaps with patterns it has seen elsewhere. You can reduce that risk by giving it evidence, narrowing the task, and checking its output like a small contribution from an unfamiliar developer.

1. Give the model the right evidence

Before asking for a change, provide the files and details that determine the answer: relevant function signatures, package versions, configuration, and nearby tests. For repository work, ask the model to inspect the codebase first and identify the files it plans to change. Avoid pasting an entire repository when a few focused files will do; irrelevant context can obscure the details that matter.

For example, instead of asking, “Add retries to this API client,” include the client implementation, its dependency versions, the expected retry policy, and an existing test. If the model cannot inspect your repository directly, paste the relevant excerpts and label their file paths. Tell it not to assume APIs that are not shown or documented.

2. Turn vague requests into constraints

Specify what should change and what must stay unchanged. Include the language and framework versions, expected inputs and outputs, error behavior, compatibility requirements, and any performance or security limits. Ask for the smallest implementation that satisfies those constraints.

A useful instruction might be: “Use the installed HTTP client version. Retry only on timeouts and 5xx responses, at most twice, with exponential backoff. Do not retry 4xx errors. Add tests for each case. If the client API is unclear from the supplied files, ask before implementing.” This gives the model fewer opportunities to invent behavior.

3. Make uncertainty visible

Ask the model to separate verified facts from assumptions. Have it point to the provided file, test, or documentation supporting important API choices. For unfamiliar dependencies, request a version-specific example or ask it to flag what needs checking instead of presenting a guess as fact.

Do not treat confident wording as evidence. If the answer depends on a method, configuration option, or framework behavior, verify it in the installed package, official documentation, or source code. This is especially important when code touches authentication, data loss, permissions, or production infrastructure.

4. Verify the result with tools

Generated code is a draft. Run the project’s formatter, type checker, linter, and relevant tests. Add tests for boundaries and failure paths, not just the happy path. Review the diff for unrelated edits, swallowed exceptions, unsafe defaults, and dependencies or APIs that do not exist in your project.

When a test fails, share the exact error and the smallest relevant code section. Ask for a diagnosis before requesting another rewrite. That keeps the next attempt grounded in observable behavior rather than adding a second layer of guesses.

5. Match the model and workflow to the task

Use a capable model for multi-file changes, tricky debugging, or unclear requirements; a faster, lower-cost model may be enough for boilerplate or a focused test. Keep prompts and repository context consistent when comparing outputs. Lower sampling randomness can make repeated generations more consistent, but it does not verify facts or replace tests.

For teams using Claude Code, Codex, or an OpenAI SDK, API cost can make frequent iterations easier to sustain. 59API provides pay-as-you-go access to native Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, through the base URL https://api.59api.com. It is designed to work with Claude Code and Codex and is compatible with OpenAI SDKs. Its low-cost relay pricing, official-quality models without downgrades, and referral rebate make it a practical option for developers who want to test, compare, and verify generations without committing to a large plan. Check the current model and account details before configuring a project.

Quick-start checklist

Reducing hallucinations is a workflow, not a magic prompt. Give the model reliable context, make uncertainty explicit, and require executable evidence before accepting a change. Developers exploring a lower-cost way to access Claude and GPT models can sign up with 59API and try the pay-as-you-go setup with their existing tools.
