Prompt Engineering Basics: Cut Your API Bill by 62.5%

Guides · EN · 2026-10-13

Prompt engineering means giving an AI model clear instructions, relevant context, and a defined output format. For developers, better prompts can reduce token usage, retries, and unnecessary calls to expensive models. The practical goal is a correct result at the lowest total cost. Start with a measurable task, then optimize the prompt against examples from your application.

Consider a support-ticket classifier. It needs to assign a category, estimate urgency, and return structured data. Sending an entire conversation history and asking for a detailed explanation adds cost without necessarily improving those three fields.

Build a prompt with four explicit parts. Separate stable instructions from the content that changes on each request:

Place stable rules in the system or developer instruction field your chosen API supports. Put ticket text in a separate message or clearly delimited block. When available, use schema-constrained structured output and validate it in your application. A JSON request written in the prompt alone does not guarantee valid JSON.

Calculate the savings before changing providers. API costs commonly depend on input and output tokens. Use this formula: cost = input tokens × input price per million ÷ 1,000,000 + output tokens × output price per million ÷ 1,000,000. The following rates are illustrative, not published 59API prices.

At $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, a request using 6,000 input tokens and 1,200 output tokens costs $0.012. Reducing it to 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens costs $0.0045: a 62.5% reduction. Across 100,000 requests, that changes the bill from $1,200 to $450, saving $750 before retries, caching, or other charges.

Remove tokens that do not improve the answer. Retrieve relevant documentation sections instead of attaching a whole manual. Replace duplicated instructions with one precise rule. Ask for the fields your application consumes rather than an explanation you discard. Set an output limit that fits the response, but check for truncation: an incomplete answer can trigger another paid request. Some reasoning models also bill tokens that are not visible in the final response.

Add examples only where they fix errors. Begin without examples, then test 50–100 representative inputs, including ambiguous cases. If billing questions repeatedly become bugs, add one example that clarifies that boundary. Each example adds input tokens on every request. Keep it only if the improvement justifies its recurring cost.

Route straightforward work to a cheaper model. Classification, extraction, and simple rewriting are useful starting points. Reserve larger models for tasks that fail your quality checks. Using the optimized token counts above, a hypothetical model priced at $0.25 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens costs $0.001125 per request. Routing 80% of 100,000 requests to it and 20% to the $0.0045 model costs $180, versus $450 for using the latter throughout. Additional fallback calls increase that total.

59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without model downgrades, making it a useful option for comparing cost and quality across models. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, and compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs simplifies integration. Check current model rates and the documented endpoint configuration before running your benchmark. Its referral rebate can provide additional savings; treat that separately from your baseline operating budget.

Track cost per successful task, valid-output rate, latency, and retry frequency. Version your prompts and rerun the same evaluation set after changes. If you want to test this workflow, sign up for 59API and start with a small batch of real application inputs.
