Prompt Caching: Cut AI Token Costs Without Rewriting Apps

Preços · EN · 2026-10-04

What Prompt Caching Does

Prompt caching lets an AI provider reuse a previously processed prompt prefix instead of reading and billing the full prefix from scratch on every request. It is especially useful when an application repeatedly sends the same large instructions, product documentation, codebase conventions, policies, tool definitions, or reference material.

For example, a support assistant may send 20,000 tokens of company documentation plus a short customer question on every turn. Without caching, the model must process those 20,000 input tokens each time. With prompt caching, the provider can recognize the unchanged opening content and charge a lower cached-input rate for it, while processing only the new question normally. The output is still freshly generated; caching does not mean reusing an old answer.

Start With a Stable Prompt Prefix

The most important rule is simple: put reusable content first and changing content last. Cache matching generally depends on an exact or near-exact prefix, so a timestamp, random ID, user name, or changing conversation message placed early can prevent a cache hit.

A practical structure is: stable system policy, stable reference documents, stable tool configuration, conversation history that can remain unchanged, then the newest user message. This layout improves the chance that consecutive calls share the same cacheable prefix.

How Caching Works With Claude and GPT APIs

Implementation details vary by model provider. Claude supports explicit prompt caching controls, where you mark a reusable content block with a cache-control setting. That gives developers clear control over which large prompt sections should be retained for the provider's cache lifetime. Consult the current Claude API documentation for the supported cache duration, minimum token threshold, and model-specific pricing before production use.

Some GPT APIs provide automatic prompt caching for repeated prompt prefixes. In those cases, you usually do not add a special cache marker; instead, you design requests so their beginning remains identical. Automatic caching may have minimum prompt-length requirements and only applies after the provider recognizes a matching prefix. Usage responses can expose cached-token details, which makes it possible to measure the actual benefit instead of guessing.

Do not assume that every repeated string is cached forever. Caches can expire, vary by model, and be scoped to a provider's infrastructure. Build your application so it remains correct when a request is a cache miss; caching is a cost and latency optimization, not application state.

Measure Savings Before Expanding Usage

Add logging for input tokens, cached input tokens when available, output tokens, model name, and request cost. Compare a cold first request with subsequent requests that use the same prefix. A high cache-hit rate often indicates that your prompt composition is working. A low rate usually means dynamic content appears too early, the prompt is below the provider's caching threshold, or formatting changes between calls.

Prompt caching works best alongside ordinary token discipline. Remove duplicated instructions, summarize old conversation turns, retrieve only relevant document chunks, and select a smaller model for routine tasks. Caching a needlessly huge prompt is still less efficient than sending a focused prompt.

Use 59API for Low-Cost Model Access

59API is a practical option when you want to apply these optimizations without managing several provider integrations. It offers pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. Its API relay is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows, using the base URL https://api.59api.com.

That compatibility means you can keep your existing client patterns while choosing an economical route for development and production workloads. Combine provider-supported caching with 59API's low-cost pricing to reduce repeated-input spending without downgrading the model used for important work. Developers who plan to run repeated agent, coding, or knowledge-assistant prompts can sign up for 59API and test cache-aware request layouts against their own token usage.
