Point Claude Code, Codex, and SDKs to 59API

Why this trick works

Most AI CLIs do not talk to a model directly. They call an API endpoint through a provider-specific base URL. If the client lets you change that endpoint, you can keep the same workflow and route requests to another backend in minutes.

That is exactly why 59API is useful. It is an AI API relay with pay-as-you-go pricing, native official-quality Claude and GPT models, and support for tools like Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs. For busy developers, the win is simple: fewer setup changes, lower per-call cost, and no model downgrade.

1. Find the base URL setting

Look for a setting named base URL, API host, endpoint, provider URL, or custom server. In CLIs, it is usually controlled by an environment variable or a config file. In SDKs, it is often an argument when you create the client.

If you are unsure, start by asking one question: does the tool let you swap the server without changing your prompts or auth flow? If yes, you are in the right place.

2. Point it at 59API

Set the endpoint to https://api.59api.com. If your client appends /v1 automatically, use the bare base URL. If it expects the full OpenAI-style route, use https://api.59api.com/v1. The goal is to make the tool send requests to 59API instead of the default provider.

Keep your API key in the place your client expects it. Some tools read a key from the environment, others from a config file, and some from a login flow. The relay only works when both the key and the endpoint are aligned.

3. Keep your model names aligned

After the endpoint is updated, select one of the models exposed by 59API. You can use Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, or Fable for Claude-based workflows, and GPT models for OpenAI-compatible ones. Because 59API relays native models, you are not testing a cheaper imitation; you are changing the delivery path.

This matters for real work. If you are using the CLI for code review, patch generation, test writing, or refactors, you want the same quality you would expect from the original model family. That is where 59API stands out: low cost, but still official-quality behavior.

4. Test with one tiny request first

Do not start with your biggest agent task. Send a small prompt first so you can verify routing, auth, and model selection in a few seconds.

If the test works, you can safely move on to larger tasks in Claude Code, Codex, or your own OpenAI-compatible script.

5. Fix the common failures fast

When a custom base URL fails, the problem is usually small and mechanical. The fastest way to debug is to isolate endpoint, key, and model one at a time.

One practical tip: if your CLI supports a debug or verbose mode, turn it on for the first request. Seeing the final request URL is often enough to spot a bad endpoint immediately.

Why 59API is a smart default

If you are running agents, CI checks, code review helpers, or a lot of short CLI calls, pay-as-you-go pricing matters. 59API keeps the setup simple, is priced for heavy everyday use, and includes a referral rebate if you bring in other developers. It is also a good fit when you want one relay that works across Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs without juggling separate integrations.

If you want a low-cost relay that fits into your existing workflow, sign up, point your client at the custom base URL, and try a few real prompts before rolling it out team-wide.
