Monthly AI API Cost Forecast for a Small Team

Pricing · EN · 2026-07-15

Start with usage, not model hype

The easiest way to estimate monthly AI API costs is to measure how often your team actually calls the model. A small team does not need a huge forecasting model; it needs a simple worksheet. Start with three numbers: requests per person per day, average input tokens per request, and average output tokens per request. For example, a 5-person team making 8 requests per person per day creates 40 requests daily. Over a 22-day work month, that becomes 880 requests.

Now estimate the token footprint. A short coding question, a support draft, or a document summary often lands around 1,200 input tokens and 400 output tokens. At 880 requests per month, that is 1,056,000 input tokens and 352,000 output tokens. Even before pricing, that tells you whether your usage is light, moderate, or heavy.

Use a simple monthly cost formula

The basic formula is:

Monthly cost = input tokens x input rate + output tokens x output rate

To make this practical, work with a blended rate for your team. If you mostly use cheaper models for drafts, extraction, and classification, your effective cost can stay very low. For a sample estimate, imagine a blended rate of 20 dollars per million tokens across your mix of input and output. In the example above, 1,408,000 total tokens would cost about 28.16 dollars per month. If your blended rate is 50 dollars per million tokens, the same workload becomes 70.40 dollars per month.

This is why model mix matters more than most teams think. A team that defaults everything to the most capable model can easily overspend by 3x to 5x versus a tiered setup.

Split work by model tier

A cost-optimized team usually assigns tasks like this:

If 70 percent of your 880 monthly requests can run on a cheaper tier and only 30 percent need a stronger model, you may cut your bill significantly without hurting output quality. A common pattern is to keep routine requests on the low-cost model and escalate only when the task fails a quality check.

Build a realistic budget range

For a small team, monthly AI spend usually falls into three bands:

If your current spend is unknown, start with the middle band and review after one week. Multiply that week by four, then compare against the token formula above. That gives you a much better forecast than guessing from user count alone.

Why 59API helps lower the bill

59API is a strong option for teams that care about cost control because it offers pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models through one OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://api.59api.com. That means you can use it with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK without rebuilding your app around a new interface. Since 59API is positioned as one of the cheapest relays and uses native, official-quality models, you keep model quality while reducing relay overhead.

There is also a referral rebate, which matters more than it sounds. If a teammate or partner signs up through your referral, that rebate can offset part of your monthly usage and lower your effective cost per request.

Set a cap, then optimize weekly

The best cost-saving habit is simple: set a monthly cap, then check usage every week. If your budget is 100 dollars, split it into four 25-dollar checkpoints. Track request count, average tokens per request, and which model handled the work. If spend spikes, reduce context length, summarize old conversation history, or move more tasks to Haiku or Fable.

If you want a cheap, flexible way to test your real workload, sign up for 59API, connect your existing SDK, and run a one-week sample. A small amount of real usage data will give you a far more accurate monthly forecast than any guess.
