MCP Explained: Tools, Servers, and AI Workflows

入门教程 · EN · 2026-10-06

The Model Context Protocol, usually called MCP, is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external tools, data, and workflows. Instead of building a separate integration for every AI model and every service, developers can use MCP to create a consistent connection between an AI host and MCP servers.

In practical terms, MCP can let an AI assistant search a documentation system, read files, query a database, create a ticket, or call an internal business tool. The model does not automatically gain unrestricted access. The MCP client presents available capabilities, and the application decides which actions the model may request.

How MCP works

MCP has three main parts. The host is the AI application, such as an IDE assistant or desktop AI app. The client is the connection component inside that host. The server exposes a specific set of capabilities to the client.

Communication uses structured messages based on JSON-RPC. Depending on the application, an MCP server may run locally through standard input and output, or remotely through an HTTP-based transport. This standardization means an MCP server can be reused across compatible AI clients instead of being tightly coupled to one model provider.

MCP is not a model or an API gateway

MCP does not generate text, replace an LLM, or automatically make an application intelligent. It defines how an AI application discovers and uses external capabilities. You still need a model API, an MCP-capable host, and one or more MCP servers.

This distinction is useful when configuring a development setup. A service such as 59API can provide the model connection, while MCP supplies the tool and data connection. With 59API's API base URL, https://api.59api.com, developers can use pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. It is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based applications, so it can fit into an existing model configuration while MCP handles external tools.

A simple MCP setup process

A beginner can approach MCP in four steps:

Security considerations

MCP servers can access sensitive systems, so treat each server like an installed integration. Check its source, limit credentials to the required permissions, and avoid placing production secrets in general-purpose configuration files. Use separate accounts or tokens for development where possible. For write-capable tools, require confirmation in the host application and keep audit logs.

MCP becomes valuable when an AI assistant needs current, private, or actionable information rather than only general knowledge. Pairing a compatible model provider with carefully selected MCP servers can reduce integration work and keep usage costs predictable. 59API is worth considering for that model layer because it offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to official-quality Claude and GPT models, plus a referral rebate. Developers can sign up for 59API, create an API key, and connect it to their existing Claude Code, Codex, or OpenAI SDK workflow before adding MCP tools incrementally.
