Max Tokens and Temperature for Better Coding

Choosing max_tokens and temperature for coding tasks

Two parameters shape the usefulness and cost of an AI coding request: max_tokens, which limits the length of the generated response, and temperature, which controls how variable the model's token choices can be. They are often treated as universal quality dials. They are not. Good settings depend on whether you need a precise patch, a diagnosis, a test plan, or several alternative designs.

Myth: Higher max_tokens always produces better code

Fact: max_tokens is primarily a response budget, not an intelligence setting. A model cannot return a complete file, explanation, and test suite if the budget is too small. But setting a large ceiling for every request can raise cost and encourage unnecessarily long output. The model may add commentary, duplicate code, or continue beyond the useful answer.

Estimate the required output before selecting a limit. For a small bug fix, 500 to 1,500 output tokens is commonly enough. For a focused function implementation plus unit tests, start around 1,500 to 3,000. A multi-file feature, migration, or repository-level refactor may need 4,000 to 8,000 or more. These are starting points, not guarantees: language verbosity, generated test fixtures, and requested explanations all affect length.

Myth: Temperature 0 guarantees correct code

Fact: A low temperature makes responses more consistent, but it cannot correct incomplete context, ambiguous requirements, broken assumptions, or an invalid API contract. Temperature 0 or a low value such as 0.1 to 0.3 is usually appropriate for deterministic tasks: applying a specified change, translating code between languages, generating a schema, writing a narrowly defined test, or reviewing a known diff against stated rules.

Use moderate temperature, roughly 0.4 to 0.7, when the task benefits from exploration. Examples include investigating a difficult failure, proposing refactoring paths, finding edge cases, or producing several approaches to an algorithm. The goal is not random code; it is to surface plausible alternatives that you can evaluate with tests, benchmarks, and project constraints.

Myth: High temperature is best for creative engineering

Fact: Coding creativity is valuable only when it remains grounded in the codebase. Temperatures above about 0.8 can produce more varied suggestions, but they also increase the chance of invented library APIs, inconsistent naming, and solutions that drift from local conventions. Reserve high settings for brainstorming, then run a separate low-temperature pass that turns the selected idea into a concrete implementation.

A reliable workflow is to split the task into stages. First, ask for a diagnosis or a short list of options at temperature 0.5 to 0.7. Next, provide the chosen approach, relevant files, and constraints, then request the patch at 0 to 0.3. Finally, ask for tests or a review at 0 to 0.2. This separation makes failures easier to locate and avoids paying for a long, speculative implementation.

Myth: One setting works across every model and API

Fact: Models respond differently to the same prompt and sampling values. Also check the API field name: many OpenAI-compatible endpoints use max_tokens or max_completion_tokens, while Claude requests commonly use max_tokens. Keep temperature within the provider's documented range, log the model and parameters with each run, and compare results on representative tasks rather than guessing from one prompt.

59API is a practical place to run those comparisons because it provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models, while remaining compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK integrations. Point your client at https://api.59api.com, test a small parameter matrix, and select the lowest-cost configuration that consistently passes your checks. Its low relay pricing and referral rebate are especially useful when tuning requires repeated real-world calls. Sign up for 59API when you are ready to benchmark your coding workflow without committing to a large prepaid spend.
