LLM Streaming Internals: Cut Waste, Not Just Latency

Streaming changes delivery, not token pricing

LLM streaming lets your application display an answer before generation finishes. It usually does not make each token cheaper: the same prompt and completed answer generally incur the same token charges whether returned incrementally or together. The savings come from better control over unwanted output, retries, and abandoned requests.

That distinction matters when choosing infrastructure. 59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models, with compatibility for Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs. Its stated native, official-quality model routing means developers can pursue lower costs without accepting model downgrades.

What happens between your request and the first chunk

Your client sends the model, conversation, generation settings, and a streaming flag. An API relay authenticates and routes that request upstream. The inference service then processes the input during prefill, building attention state, commonly called the KV cache. Queueing, network travel, routing, and prefill all contribute to time to first token.

During decoding, the model generates successive tokens using that cached state. Tokens are not necessarily words: one word can span several tokens. The serving system converts generated tokens into output fragments and sends them over a long-lived HTTP response.

Many APIs use server-sent events, with events separated by blank lines. One event can contain multiple tokens, and one network read can contain several events or only part of one. OpenAI Chat Completions typically exposes incremental content through choice deltas; Responses and Claude APIs use different event schemas. Use the parser for your actual endpoint, not a universal chunk handler.

Measure three numbers before optimizing

For example, an 800-token answer at 40 tokens per second takes roughly 20 seconds to generate. With a 0.4-second initial delay, completion is approximately 20.4 seconds away, although the user starts reading much earlier. Streaming improves perceived responsiveness; it does not eliminate that generation work.

Put a dollar value on early cancellation

Use this illustrative rate card, not a quoted 59API price: $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. A request with 2,000 input tokens and 800 output tokens costs $0.002 + $0.004 = $0.006.

If a user stops after 200 output tokens and cancellation reaches the inference service promptly, the same request could cost $0.002 + $0.001 = $0.003. That is a 50% reduction. Across 100,000 comparable requests, the difference is $300.

However, closing a browser tab does not guarantee upstream cancellation. Your frontend must notify your backend, and your backend must abort the provider request. A relay must propagate that interruption too. Tokens generated before cancellation takes effect may still be billed; verify the service's actual accounting.

Implement streaming without hidden waste

Combine cheaper routing with controlled generation

59API's API base URL is https://api.59api.com; configure the required endpoint path and authentication for your chosen SDK or coding tool. Compare current model-specific prices, caching charges, supported streaming features, and cancellation behavior before migrating production traffic.

Positioned among the cheapest relays, 59API also offers a referral rebate. Treat that as an additional benefit, not a substitute for measuring actual usage. If lower-cost native-model access fits your workload, consider signing up and testing a small, instrumented streaming workload first.
