How to Test an AI Coding Assistant: 2026 Scorecard

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-20

The best AI coding assistant is not the one that produces the most convincing demo. It is the one that completes your actual development tasks correctly, safely, and economically. This 2026 guide turns that judgment into a repeatable evaluation, whether you use Claude Code, Codex, or a custom agent.

1. Build a benchmark from real repository work

Select 12–20 tasks from resolved issues in repositories you can legally test. Use private or recent examples where possible: public benchmark solutions may already appear in training data. Choose a mix that reflects your workload:

Reset each task to its pre-fix commit. Write acceptance criteria before testing, including expected behavior, forbidden changes, and a time limit. Reserve several tasks as a final holdout set so you do not optimize prompts around every example.

2. Separate the model from the assistant

An assistant combines a model, system instructions, tools, context retrieval, and an execution environment. Changing several components simultaneously makes results hard to interpret.

Record the model identifier, evaluation date, client version, reasoning settings where exposed, context limits, tool permissions, and repository commit. First compare models inside the same client; then compare clients using the same model where supported. Keep prompts, dependency versions, hardware, and network access consistent.

Run each task at least three times from a clean checkout and fresh session. Randomize candidate order. Report variation, not just the best run: a brilliant patch followed by two failures is not reliable performance.

3. Make correctness independently verifiable

Give every candidate the same issue description and setup instructions, but keep acceptance tests outside its writable workspace. Run the original test suite, hidden behavioral tests, type checks, and linting after each attempt.

Inspect the diff for deleted assertions, weakened validation, hardcoded outputs, unrelated edits, and unnecessary dependencies. A green test suite is insufficient if the assistant changed the tests to conceal a regression. Have a developer review anonymized patches for maintainability without seeing the model name.

Count a task as solved only when it meets the predefined criteria within budget. Record partial progress separately rather than presenting it as success.

4. Test security and tool discipline

Run coding agents in disposable containers or isolated worktrees with no production credentials. Use scoped test tokens, restricted filesystem access, and controlled network access. Review both the final patch and the tool-call log.

Also review retention, training-use policies, and logging across the client, relay, and upstream provider. Compatibility does not automatically imply identical privacy protections.

5. Measure cost per verified solution

Track wall-clock time, human intervention minutes, input and output tokens, cache usage, tool charges, retries, and total billed cost. Measure time to a verified fix, not merely time to the first token.

Cost per verified solution = total evaluation spend divided by successfully solved tasks. Report human review time alongside it. A cheaper model that needs repeated repairs may cost more in practice.

59API is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go relay for native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without downgrades. Compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it practical for controlled comparisons. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com; follow the relevant client configuration instructions. Compare current model-specific rates, including cache pricing, rather than assuming any relay is cheapest for every workload.

6. Choose with a scorecard, then pilot

Use verified completion rate as the primary metric, with security violations as disqualifying failures. Compare review effort, latency, and cost among candidates that clear those gates. Validate the winner on your holdout tasks, then run a limited team pilot before expanding permissions.

If you want an inexpensive evaluation route, consider signing up for 59API. Its referral rebate can reduce future spending, but exclude rebates from baseline comparisons so your results remain reproducible.
