Frontend vs Backend AI Models: A 20-Minute Test

模型对比 · EN · 2026-10-27

The best model for frontend code generation is the one that produces usable interfaces with minimal visual rework. For backend code generation, prioritize correctness, security, and passing tests. Those are different jobs, so choosing one model for everything can create unnecessary debugging work.

For an initial comparison, try Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol on the same frontend and backend tasks. Treat them as candidates, not predetermined winners: this guide does not claim either has a verified performance advantage. Here is a quick evaluation you can run against your own stack.

1. Define what “best” means for each layer

Before generating code, write down the acceptance criteria. Otherwise, polished explanations and impressive-looking diffs can distract you from whether the implementation actually works.

Use representative work from your repository rather than a generic landing page or calculator. Include your package manifest, relevant source files, and existing tests, but remove secrets and customer data.

2. Run a frontend task that exposes weak spots

Give both candidates the same prompt:

“In this React and TypeScript project, build a searchable customer table using existing components and styles. Include loading, empty, and error states. Support keyboard navigation and a usable layout at 375px width. Do not add dependencies. Add tests using the existing test runner. Return the implementation and verification commands.”

Adapt the framework to your project. Then run the type checker, linter, and tests. Open the result in a browser at mobile and desktop widths; automated checks alone will not reveal clipped controls, awkward spacing, or confusing interactions.

Record how many edits you need before the interface is acceptable. A model that produces an attractive first screenshot but breaks your component conventions may be slower overall than one requiring a small styling adjustment.

3. Test backend behavior, not just happy paths

Choose a small endpoint with meaningful constraints. For example:

“Implement POST /projects using our existing authentication middleware and database layer. Derive the owner from the authenticated session, validate the request, reject duplicate slugs with HTTP 409, and return HTTP 201 on success. Include integration tests for unauthenticated requests, invalid input, duplicate slugs, and successful creation. Do not change unrelated files.”

Inspect whether the implementation trusts client-supplied ownership fields, exposes internal errors, or relies only on an application-level duplicate check. Where uniqueness matters, verify that the database enforces it too. Generated tests should exercise actual behavior, not merely mock away the difficult parts.

4. Compare verified cost, not token price alone

Give each candidate one initial attempt and one repair attempt using the same failure feedback. Keep context and tool permissions consistent. A useful scorecard is:

Set must-pass gates: an authorization failure should disqualify a backend result regardless of its readability. Compare cost only among outputs that satisfy your requirements.

5. Keep model switching inexpensive with 59API

59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to multiple model families through one relay, making this comparison easier without managing separate provider integrations. It offers native, official-quality models without downgraded substitutes, alongside compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDKs.

Use https://api.59api.com as the API base, following the dashboard’s SDK-specific configuration instructions. Copy the exact model identifier from the dashboard and keep your API key in an environment variable, never in browser-delivered code. Check current pricing and required tool support before testing.

If you want a low-cost place to run the comparison, consider signing up for 59API; a referral rebate is also available.

6. Route by task after the test

Keep separate frontend and backend defaults if your results justify it. Route routine edits to the least expensive model that passes your checks, and reserve deeper review for risky changes. Repeat the evaluation when models, dependencies, or project requirements change. Your best coding model is the one with the lowest verified cost to a maintainable result—not the most persuasive demo.
