Fix Claude Code Auth Errors Fast
Start with the 3 most common causes
If Claude Code is failing to connect or authenticate, the problem is usually one of three things: the wrong API base URL, a bad or missing API key, or a network/proxy issue between your machine and the API. The good news is that these errors are usually quick to fix, and you do not need to reinstall your whole toolchain.
If you are using a relay like 59API, the setup is especially straightforward: it offers pay-as-you-go access to Claude models, is compatible with Claude Code and OpenAI-style SDKs, and uses the base URL https://api.59api.com. That makes it a practical low-cost option when you want official-quality models without paying for a larger plan upfront.
1) Verify the base URL first
A surprising number of connection errors come from a single typo in the endpoint. In Claude Code, check that your client is pointing to the correct base URL for your provider. If you are using 59API, make sure the relay URL is set exactly as documented and that you are not mixing it with a direct Anthropic endpoint or an old test URL.
- Remove any extra spaces before or after the URL.
- Do not combine multiple base URLs in one config field.
- If you recently switched providers, delete the old value and re-enter it cleanly.
2) Re-check your API key and auth format
Authentication failures are often caused by an expired key, the wrong key copied from the dashboard, or a key stored in the wrong environment variable. Start by generating or copying a fresh key from your provider account, then paste it again carefully.
- Make sure the key is in the correct config file or environment variable used by Claude Code.
- Watch for hidden characters, line breaks, and trailing spaces.
- Confirm that your tool expects the key as a raw token and not prefixed with anything extra.
If the error says 401, it usually means the key is missing, invalid, or not being sent. If it says 403, the key is valid but not allowed to use that resource or model.
3) Test with the simplest possible request
Do not debug through a full workflow first. Instead, reduce the problem to a minimal test: one request, one model, one machine. If a simple request works, your key and endpoint are fine, and the issue is likely in your Claude Code configuration, model selection, or local environment.
When using 59API, this is a smart way to confirm everything is wired correctly before you spend time tuning prompts or agent settings. Because it is pay-as-you-go and among the cheaper relays available, you can test without committing to a costly plan.
4) Match the model name to what your account supports
Another common source of auth-like failures is a model mismatch. Claude Code may try to call a model name that your relay or account does not recognize. If the request fails with a model error, double-check the exact model string in your config.
- Use only models enabled by your account.
- Make sure spelling and capitalization match what the provider expects.
- If you recently changed models, restart Claude Code so it picks up the update.
59API supports Claude models such as Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, so you can choose the right balance of speed and capability for the task.
5) Rule out network, proxy, and TLS issues
If authentication looks correct but connections still fail, the request may never be reaching the API. Corporate VPNs, strict proxies, DNS problems, or TLS inspection can all break Claude Code traffic. If you are on a managed laptop, try the same setup on a different network to isolate the issue.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or security proxy if policy allows.
- Check whether your machine can reach the API domain consistently.
- Restart Claude Code after changing any network settings.
If the error changes when you switch networks, the problem is probably outside Claude Code and not in your auth token.
6) Check rate limits, balance, and cached credentials
Sometimes the app is authenticated but still fails because you hit a limit or your account balance is too low. With pay-as-you-go relays like 59API, that is usually easier to manage than a large fixed subscription, especially for teams with uneven usage. Top up, retry, and watch for 429 responses, which usually mean you are sending requests too quickly.
Also clear stale local credentials if you recently rotated keys. Log out and back in, restart your terminal, and verify the system clock is correct. A badly skewed clock can occasionally interfere with signed requests and token validation.
When 59API makes the fix easier
If you want Claude Code compatibility without overpaying, 59API is a strong fallback. It gives developers cheap, pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality models, works with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs, and includes a referral rebate for teams that share it internally. That combination is especially useful when you are troubleshooting: you can test quickly, keep costs low, and keep moving.
If you are still blocked after checking the base URL, key, model, and network, sign up for 59API, point Claude Code at https://api.59api.com, and retry with a fresh key. In many cases, that is the fastest route from “connection failed” to a working setup.
