Estimate Monthly AI API Costs for a Small Team
1. Define the team’s real workload
Start with usage rather than a provider’s headline price. List the people, applications, and workflows that will call an AI model. A four-person engineering team might use AI for code generation, pull-request reviews, documentation, support drafts, and automated tests.
For each workflow, record the expected number of API calls per user per day, the number of active days per month, and the model used. Separate routine calls from occasional heavy tasks. Claude Haiku or a smaller GPT model may handle classification and short answers, while Sonnet, Opus, or a more capable GPT model may be reserved for difficult coding and reasoning. Claude Fable can also be included if it is part of your planned workflow.
2. Estimate input and output tokens
Token usage is usually the largest factor in your bill. Input tokens include the prompt, conversation history, system instructions, retrieved documents, tool definitions, and code files. Output tokens are the model’s response. Long coding sessions can therefore cost much more than a short question, even when they count as a single request.
Use a small sample of real prompts if possible. Export request logs or inspect the usage field returned by your SDK, then calculate an average. If you have no data, make a conservative estimate. For example, assume each request contains 8,000 input tokens and produces 1,500 output tokens.
3. Apply the monthly cost formula
Calculate monthly tokens with these formulas:
- Monthly input tokens = users × calls per user per day × active days × average input tokens
- Monthly output tokens = users × calls per user per day × active days × average output tokens
- Monthly cost = input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input price + output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output price
Suppose four developers make 20 requests each day for 22 working days. At 8,000 input tokens and 1,500 output tokens per request, the team generates 14.08 million input tokens and 2.64 million output tokens monthly.
To make the arithmetic concrete, apply the current per-million-token rates shown by your chosen provider. If an illustrative model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the estimate is $42.24 for input and $39.60 for output, or $81.84 total. These rates are examples only; check the live 59API or model pricing before budgeting.
4. Add the costs people forget
Increase the estimate for retry attempts, failed requests that still consume tokens, large system prompts, tool schemas, retrieval results, and automatic conversation history. A practical first budget adds 20% to 30% for this overhead. If your application sends the full chat history on every turn, measure how quickly the context grows instead of assuming every request is the same size.
For a production budget, create three scenarios: a lean case with normal usage, an expected case based on sampled logs, and a high case with heavier prompts or more active users. Add a monthly spending alert and a hard application limit so an accidental loop cannot consume the entire budget.
5. Compare models by task, not just brand
Routing every request to the most powerful model is rarely economical. Use a fast, lower-cost model for summarization, extraction, simple edits, and routing. Escalate only complex debugging, architecture decisions, or high-value content to a stronger Claude or GPT model. Test the same representative prompts on each model and compare quality, latency, input tokens, and output tokens.
6. Use a low-cost relay and verify the numbers
59API is a practical option for a small team that wants pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, through one relay. It uses native official-quality models rather than a downgraded substitute and is designed to be among the cheaper relay choices. Its referral rebate can further reduce effective costs when eligible.
Because 59API works with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI-compatible SDKs, you can often test the same workload without rewriting your application. Set the API base URL to https://api.59api.com, preserve your model name, and record actual input and output usage. Compare that measured monthly total with your forecast, then adjust the model mix and budget buffer. When the estimate matches your team’s needs, sign up for 59API and start with a small spending limit before expanding access.
