Cut LLM API Costs: Fix Waste Before Changing Models

Pricing · EN · 2026-10-15

Cutting LLM API spending starts with finding which requests waste money. Switching every task to a cheaper model can increase retries and editing work. A better approach is to measure cost per successful task, remove unnecessary tokens, and compare providers using the same workload.

Why is my LLM API bill rising?

Start with a representative week of requests. Record the model, input tokens, output tokens, latency, retry count, and whether the result passed your application's checks. Group usage by feature: chat, document extraction, coding, or background processing.

Calculate request cost as input tokens multiplied by the input rate, plus output tokens multiplied by the output rate. Divide by the rate's billing unit, commonly one million tokens. Account separately for cached tokens or other charges when applicable.

How do I reduce tokens without damaging answers?

Remove irrelevant content before shortening essential instructions. For document questions, retrieve the relevant passages and include enough surrounding context to preserve meaning. For long conversations, retain recent messages and a structured summary containing decisions, constraints, and unresolved questions.

Make output requirements explicit. An extraction task might request only the required fields, with null for missing values. A support response might need three sentences rather than a full explanation. Set an appropriate output-token limit, but monitor truncation: a low ceiling that produces incomplete answers can trigger expensive retries.

Change one element at a time and compare results against the original prompt. Shorter prompts only save money when they still produce usable answers.

Which tasks can use a cheaper model?

Build a small evaluation set before changing models. Start with 30–50 representative examples, including ambiguous inputs and previous failures. Define success using checks such as field accuracy, valid output structure, passing code tests, and human review where needed.

Try lower-cost models on classification, formatting, straightforward extraction, and simple summaries. Keep stronger models available for complex reasoning and difficult coding tasks. Escalate when validation fails or the request meets predefined complexity criteria; a model's self-reported confidence alone is a weak routing signal.

Compare total cost per accepted result. A model costing half as much per call may offer little benefit if it frequently needs a second attempt and manual correction.

Will caching and retries actually save money?

They can, but implementation matters. Provider prompt caching may reduce charges for eligible repeated input. Check the selected model's caching rules, minimum input size, retention behavior, and actual cached-token usage. Keep reusable instructions stable and place changing content afterward when the provider's cache requires a matching prefix.

Application-level caching can avoid a call entirely for identical, reusable results. Include the model, prompt version, and relevant settings in the cache key, and invalidate results when source data changes.

For retries, use capped exponential backoff for transient failures and respect rate-limit guidance. Fix invalid requests instead of resending them. Set a maximum attempt count and log exhausted retries so failures cannot become an unnoticed spending loop.

Can 59API lower costs without downgrading models?

59API is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go AI API relay offering Claude and GPT access with native, official-quality models and no model downgrade. That makes it a useful option when you want to reduce the access price while retaining your chosen model.

Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, and it supports Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows. When configuring an SDK, follow its base-URL requirements and 59API's endpoint instructions, then test a small request before moving production traffic.

Compare current rates for the exact model and token categories you use. Run the same evaluation set through your existing setup and 59API, checking answer quality, latency, errors, and billed usage. Its referral rebate can provide additional savings; review the current terms separately from your usage-cost estimate.

If the comparison fits your workload, sign up for 59API and start with a small, measurable batch.
