Cut API Costs: Move OpenAI Traffic to a Relay

省钱与定价 · EN · 2026-10-12

When API usage grows, small per-token differences can turn into a meaningful monthly expense. A relay can lower the cost of eligible requests without requiring a rewrite of your application. Here is a measured way to migrate from the official OpenAI API to 59API while keeping quality and spending visible.

Start with a baseline, not a guess

Before changing your endpoint, review the last 30 days of usage. Record requests, input and output tokens, model names, and total spend. Separate workloads such as chat, code generation, and batch summarization; their token patterns and quality requirements may differ.

Estimate monthly cost with this formula for each model: input tokens divided by 1,000,000, multiplied by the input price per million, plus output tokens divided by 1,000,000, multiplied by the output price per million. Use the current published prices for both services, since rates can change. For example, a workload using 80 million input tokens and 20 million output tokens should be priced as two separate line items, not as 100 million tokens at one blended rate.

Set a target before migrating. If your current monthly bill is $1,000, a 20% reduction means a target of $800, or $200 saved. This makes it easier to judge whether a model or routing change is worth the engineering effort.

Change the endpoint with minimal code

59API provides pay-as-you-go access to GPT models and Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable. It is designed for OpenAI SDK compatibility, as well as use with Claude Code and Codex. For an OpenAI SDK integration, the first change is typically the base URL: set it to https://api.59api.com, then use the API key and model identifier provided in your 59API account documentation.

Keep credentials in environment variables rather than source code. For example, set a separate API_BASE_URL and API_KEY in your deployment environment, and point your client configuration at those values. That lets you switch between providers without editing application logic. Check the current 59API instructions for the exact authentication format and model IDs before deploying.

Do not switch every production request at once. Route 5% of suitable traffic to the relay for a day, then increase to 25%, 50%, and 100% if results are sound. Keep a quick rollback path by retaining the old endpoint configuration.

Verify savings and output quality

Compare matched requests across providers. Use the same prompt, model class, temperature, and token limit, then review a sample of at least 50 responses for your main task. Track latency, error rate, output length, and task-specific quality—not just the invoice. Native official-quality models help avoid the false economy of switching to a weaker model, but your own prompts and workload should decide the final choice.

Make the switch financially useful

After one week, calculate the cost per successful task, including retries and any human corrections. A cheaper request is not a saving if it creates extra work. If the numbers hold, migrate the remaining compatible workloads and review spend monthly. 59API’s low-cost, pay-as-you-go model and referral rebate can further improve the economics; check the current terms and rates before calculating your expected savings. If you want to test the approach, sign up for 59API and begin with a small, measurable traffic slice.
