Cut AI Output Costs: A Prompt Budgeting Guide
Verbose AI responses become expensive when you generate thousands of summaries, support replies, or code reviews. The practical fix is to define the smallest complete answer your application needs, then measure whether the model delivers it reliably. This is prompt optimization, rather than model fine-tuning: you change instructions and response structure without training a model.
Start with the cost of one successful response. For a basic text request, cost equals input tokens multiplied by the input rate, plus output tokens multiplied by the output rate. Divide per-million-token prices by 1,000,000 before calculating. Cached input, reasoning tokens, and tool charges can change the total, so check the model’s billing rules.
Consider illustrative prices of $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. These are example rates, not a 59API price quote. A request with 800 input tokens and 600 output tokens costs $0.0038. Add 40 tokens of precise instructions and reduce the answer to 180 output tokens: the cost becomes $0.00174, a reduction of about 54%.
Across 100,000 requests, that is $380 versus $174, saving $206. The extra instructions cost $4 across that volume but remove $210 in output charges. At these example rates, each added input token must eliminate more than 0.2 output tokens to reduce the bill.
Replace vague brevity requests with an explicit response contract. “Be concise” leaves the model to decide what matters. Specify the deliverable, length, required facts, and stopping point. For example, replace “Summarize this support ticket and suggest next steps” with:
“Return exactly three bullets: issue, likely cause, next action. Use at most 25 words per bullet. Preserve error codes and affected product names. If the cause is unknown, say unknown. Do not add an introduction, conclusion, or restate the ticket.”
This creates a 75-word ceiling while preserving information a support agent can use. Word limits are approximate instructions; token usage remains the billing measure.
- Remove repeated context. Ask for the recommendation directly instead of requesting a summary followed by a recommendation. Repeating the user’s question often adds tokens without helping the workflow.
- Limit alternatives. Request one recommended solution and one fallback only when needed. “List all possible approaches” creates an unpredictable output budget.
- Request targeted code changes. Ask for a patch or changed function when your workflow supports it. Specify whether tests and explanations are required, so the model does not reproduce an entire file.
- Use compact structured responses. For classification, request only the fields your application consumes, such as category and priority. Use schema enforcement where supported. Avoid requesting explanations for every field.
- Make detail conditional. For validation tasks, request “PASS” when all checks succeed and a maximum of three actionable findings when they fail. Define the checks explicitly.
Set an API ceiling after improving the prompt. Use the output-limit parameter supported by your model and endpoint, such as max_tokens or max_completion_tokens. They are not interchangeable across every API. If successful answers typically use 180 tokens, test a 300-token ceiling before tightening it. A ceiling limits generation; it does not guarantee a complete answer. Some models also count hidden reasoning against their completion budget.
Test savings against quality and retries. Run both prompts on the same 100 representative inputs with the same model and settings. Record billed tokens, task success, truncation, and retry count. Include long inputs and ambiguous cases. Compare total spend divided by successful results: a cheaper first response can lose its advantage when missing details trigger another request.
Combine shorter outputs with a lower token rate. 59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without downgrades. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows makes it convenient for developers optimizing existing applications. The API base URL is https://api.59api.com.
