Cost per 1M Tokens: A Developer’s Provider Quick Start
Start with two prices, not one
Comparing the cost per 1M tokens across providers sounds simple until you notice that input and output usually have different rates. A cheap input price can hide expensive generations, while caching and batch discounts can change the result again.
For a useful comparison, choose an exact model, estimate your input-to-output ratio, and calculate the total cost of a representative task. Compare direct providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic with a low-cost relay such as 59API on that same basis.
1. Establish a transparent pricing baseline
The following are historical published standard API rates from May 2024, in USD per million tokens. They are reference points for understanding the calculation, not a current price ranking. Check each provider’s current pricing before purchasing.
- OpenAI GPT-4o: $5 input and $15 output.
- Anthropic Claude 3 Opus: $15 input and $75 output.
- Anthropic Claude 3 Sonnet: $3 input and $15 output.
- Anthropic Claude 3 Haiku: $0.25 input and $1.25 output.
These models are not interchangeable quality tiers. The list demonstrates why comparing providers without specifying the model is misleading. For a live comparison, record the exact model identifier, input rate, output rate, currency, and date checked.
For 59API, copy the current rates from its pricing or billing interface rather than assuming a fixed discount. Compare the same model version wherever possible; a family name alone does not establish equivalence.
2. Calculate the cost of your actual workload
Total cost = input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate + output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate.
Suppose your workload consumes 1 million input tokens and generates 200,000 output tokens. Using the historical rates above, GPT-4o would cost $8, Claude 3 Sonnet $6, Claude 3 Opus $30, and Claude 3 Haiku $0.50.
For a relay quote of $A per million input tokens and $B per million output tokens, that workload costs A + 0.2B. This makes a 59API quote directly comparable without inventing a universal relay price.
Use token counts returned by the API, not character counts. Different tokenizers can turn identical text into different token totals, so estimate each model separately when comparing different families.
3. Check the charges that change the result
- Prompt caching: Separate ordinary input, cache writes, and cache reads where the provider bills them differently. Do not count every repeated prompt as automatically discounted.
- Output and reasoning: Check whether billable output includes reasoning tokens that are not displayed in the final response.
- Extra services: Tool calls, search, images, and other features may introduce charges beyond text tokens.
- Operational overhead: Include retries, failed-request billing policies, taxes, and any relay-specific fees or credit-conversion rules.
Measure cost per successful task alongside token pricing. A cheaper model that needs three attempts can cost more than one reliable completion.
4. Run a small 59API comparison
59API is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go relay offering native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without downgrading. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it convenient for testing an alternative billing route without redesigning your application.
- Create an API key and select the exact model available in your account.
- Configure your client using the API base URL https://api.59api.com. Follow its integration instructions for any required versioned path and authentication settings.
- Run 20–50 representative tasks with matching prompts, output limits, and tool settings.
- Log token usage, billed cost, latency, errors, and whether each result passes your acceptance checks.
59API also offers a referral rebate. Treat that as a separate benefit rather than subtracting an unearned rebate from your base cost estimate.
Choose the cheapest route that passes your tests
Compare current rates, calculate your real token mix, and validate quality before switching production traffic. If you want a low-cost starting point, consider signing up for 59API and running a small, capped comparison against your existing provider.
