Context Windows Explained With a Working API Example

Modelos · EN · 2026-09-19

A context window is the amount of text an AI model can consider in one request. It includes the system instructions, conversation history, tool definitions, retrieved documents, your latest message, and usually the space reserved for the model's response. The limit is measured in tokens rather than characters or words.

Why Context Windows Matter

Suppose you ask an AI coding assistant to review a 500-line file after already discussing three other files, pasting a stack trace, and including a large project specification. Every earlier message still consumes context unless the application summarizes or removes it. Once the combined request approaches the model's limit, the API may reject it, truncate older content, or produce a less focused answer.

A useful mental model is: input tokens + requested output tokens must fit within the model's context window. A large context does not automatically produce better results. Irrelevant logs and repeated instructions can make the model spend attention on noise, increase latency, and raise your bill.

A Practical API Test

You can inspect the effect of prompt size by sending two requests through an OpenAI-compatible client. The following JavaScript example uses 59API's base URL. Replace the model value with the model ID available in your account:

const client = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.API_KEY, baseURL: "https://api.59api.com" });

Request: const response = await client.chat.completions.create({ model: "your-model-id", messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Summarize this function and list two risks: " + sourceCode }], max_tokens: 400 });

The important controls are the size of sourceCode and max_tokens. If the input is large, reserving 400 output tokens may leave less room for the request itself. Track the provider's usage fields in the response when available, such as prompt tokens and completion tokens, so you can find which requests are consuming the budget.

Three Ways to Stay Inside the Limit

Context Window Versus Memory

A context window is temporary working space, not permanent memory. When a chat ends, the model does not inherently retain its contents. Even during one chat, an application may summarize or drop older messages when the limit is approached. If a fact must remain available, store it in your database or a project file and retrieve it explicitly.

Choosing a Cost-Effective API

Context management also affects cost because providers generally charge for input and output tokens. 59API can be a practical low-cost relay for developers who need pay-as-you-go access to official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. Its API is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK integrations, so you can test smaller prompts without rewriting your application. A referral rebate can further reduce effective spend for teams with regular usage.

For a small project, start by signing up for 59API, configure your existing SDK with https://api.59api.com, and record token usage for a few real workflows. Then set practical limits: truncate logs, cap retrieved documents, summarize long sessions, and reserve enough output tokens for the answer you actually need. The result is faster, more predictable AI behavior and a clearer monthly bill.
