Context Windows: Claude vs GPT in Production

Modelos · EN · 2026-09-23

Start with the right definition

A context window is the maximum amount of tokenized information a model can process in one request. It normally includes the system prompt, conversation history, tool definitions, retrieved documents, the current user message, and the generated response. A large window is useful, but it is not automatically better: long prompts increase latency and cost, and irrelevant history can reduce answer quality.

Think of the limit as a budget rather than a document-size promise. If a model has a 200,000-token context window and you request 8,000 output tokens, the input cannot safely consume the full 200,000. The exact input/output accounting depends on the API, so always leave a deliberate response reserve.

How Claude and GPT families differ

Claude deployments commonly advertise context windows around 200,000 tokens, making Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku useful for long codebases, research files, and multi-turn analysis. GPT limits vary more visibly by model: GPT-4o is commonly listed at 128,000 tokens, while GPT-4.1 is listed at up to 1 million tokens. These are model-specific limits, not permanent rules for every model carrying the same family name.

Capability and context are separate decisions. Claude Opus may be appropriate for difficult reasoning, Sonnet for a strong quality-to-cost balance, and Haiku for fast classification or extraction. GPT models offer similarly different trade-offs, with broad tooling and SDK support. The Claude Fable label, or any new model alias, should be checked against its current model documentation rather than assumed to share another model's limit.

Build a working comparison from zero

Step 1: List your real prompt components. Record the system instructions, tools, chat history, retrieved passages, and expected answer length. Do not estimate from characters alone: code, JSON, non-English text, and tables can tokenize very differently.

Step 2: Create a budget. For a 32,000-token model, you might reserve 4,000 tokens for output and 2,000 for safety, leaving about 26,000 for instructions, history, tools, and retrieved content. Apply the same calculation to every candidate model. Use the model's tokenizer or the usage values returned by the API to replace rough estimates with measurements.

Step 3: Test equivalent requests. Send the same task to selected Claude and GPT model IDs, keeping temperature, tool definitions, and output limits comparable. Test a short prompt, a realistic production prompt, and a near-limit prompt. Record latency, input tokens, output tokens, truncation errors, answer quality, and total cost.

Step 4: Connect through 59API. Create an account, add your API key, and configure your OpenAI-compatible client base URL as https://api.59api.com. Select the exact model ID you tested. The relay provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude and GPT models, without a downgraded substitute, and works with OpenAI SDK integrations, Codex, and Claude Code. This makes it practical to benchmark several families without committing to a large fixed plan.

Make long context safe in production

Run this comparison on your own workload because headline limits do not predict every application's quality or cost. 59API's low-cost access makes repeated tests affordable, and its referral rebate can add further value for teams that invite other developers. When your measurements identify the best model and budget, sign up for 59API and move the tested configuration into production with explicit token limits and monitoring.
