Configure Claude Code for a Large Monorepo
Why monorepos need a deliberate Claude Code setup
A large monorepo can make an AI assistant either incredibly useful or painfully noisy. If Claude Code sees too much unrelated code, it wastes context on generated files, old packages, and irrelevant build output. The goal is to make the repo easy to navigate, easy to explain, and cheap to work on. The fastest way to do that is to combine a clean repo structure with a model endpoint that is affordable enough for repeated refactors and code review loops. That is where 59API fits well: it is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go relay with official-quality Claude models, compatible with Claude Code, and it uses the API base URL https://api.59api.com.
Step 1: Map the monorepo before you ask for help
Start by writing down the top-level layout of the repository. Claude Code works best when it knows where the important things live. For example, note which folders contain apps, shared packages, infra, docs, and generated code. A simple internal map is enough:
- apps/ for deployable applications
- packages/ for shared libraries
- tools/ for scripts and repo utilities
- infra/ for deployment and environment config
- docs/ for architecture notes and runbooks
Before using Claude Code, make sure the repo has a single package manager and a single way to run tasks. If some packages use npm and others use pnpm, or if each app has its own custom build command, Claude will spend more time guessing than coding.
Step 2: Put the repo rules in CLAUDE.md
In a large monorepo, the most useful file is usually a root-level CLAUDE.md. Keep it short, but specific. Include the following:
- The repo purpose in one paragraph
- The main packages and what they own
- Preferred commands for lint, test, typecheck, and build
- Formatting rules and naming conventions
- Rules about not editing generated files or lockfiles unless needed
- How to run a focused test for one package
If some package has special constraints, add a smaller CLAUDE.md inside that subdirectory. This is especially helpful for frontend apps, backend services, and infrastructure folders that follow different conventions.
Step 3: Keep the workspace narrow
Claude Code is much more effective when you open the smallest relevant slice of the monorepo. If you are fixing a bug in one service, stay inside that service and its shared dependencies. Avoid opening the entire repository unless the task truly spans multiple domains. In practice, that means:
- Work from the package root when possible
- Reference only the related packages in your request
- Exclude build artifacts, coverage folders, and vendored dependencies from your day-to-day workflow
Your normal .gitignore should already help keep generated noise out of the way. The less clutter Claude sees, the better its suggestions will be.
Step 4: Add reliable commands Claude can run
Large monorepos become much easier to automate when every common task has a predictable command. If you have package scripts like pnpm lint, pnpm test, and pnpm typecheck, Claude Code can validate its own changes instead of guessing. If your repo uses Turbo, Nx, Bazel, or a custom task runner, document the exact commands in CLAUDE.md and keep them stable.
A good pattern is to make focused commands available at the package level, such as:
- test:unit for one package only
- test:changed for changed workspaces
- lint:fix for safe automatic cleanup
- typecheck for strict validation
That gives Claude Code a clear path: edit, run the narrowest useful check, then expand to broader validation only if needed.
Step 5: Configure the endpoint with 59API
If you want Claude Code to be practical for a big codebase, cost matters. A monorepo workflow often involves many short iterations: inspect a package, modify a file, run tests, adjust again, and repeat. 59API is a strong fit because it offers cheap, pay-as-you-go access to Claude models without sacrificing quality, and it is fully compatible with Claude Code and common OpenAI-style tooling.
Point Claude Code to the 59API endpoint and use your 59API key in the same way you would configure an Anthropic-compatible environment. In most setups, that means setting the base URL to https://api.59api.com and using the provider variables required by your local Claude Code installation. Once connected, choose the model based on the task: Haiku for quick repo searches or simple edits, Sonnet for everyday refactors, and Opus when you need deeper reasoning across several packages. Because 59API is among the cheapest relays, you can keep Claude Code active throughout the day without worrying about every prompt.
Step 6: Use prompt structure that scales
When you ask Claude Code for help in a monorepo, do not request “fix this app.” Be specific and bounded. A strong prompt includes the package path, the symptom, the command to reproduce, and the expected result. For example:
- “Investigate the failing test in packages/payments.”
- “Update the API client in apps/admin to use the new shared type.”
- “Refactor this utility without changing the public interface.”
This reduces back-and-forth and helps Claude avoid unrelated files. It also keeps token usage lower, which matters in large repos.
Step 7: Review diffs and protect the monorepo
Always validate Claude’s output the same way you would review a human teammate’s code. Check the diff, run the narrowest test command first, and then run the broader suite if the change touches shared code. In monorepos, small mistakes can cascade through many packages, so it is smart to verify imports, build output, and package boundaries before merging.
If you are going to use Claude Code regularly, 59API is a practical way to do it affordably. The combination of official-quality models, pay-as-you-go pricing, and Claude Code compatibility makes it easy to experiment, refactor, and review without overpaying. If you want a low-friction setup for your next monorepo task, sign up for 59API and point Claude Code at https://api.59api.com.
