Compare Cost per 1M Tokens Across AI Providers

Why Cost per 1M Tokens Is the Metric That Matters

AI API pricing is usually published as a cost per one million input tokens and one million output tokens. This makes it possible to compare Claude and GPT models fairly, even when one provider lists prices per thousand tokens and another uses a different dashboard format. The important detail is that input and output pricing are separate: prompts, system instructions, tool results, and chat history are input tokens; generated answers and tool calls are output tokens.

For an accurate comparison, do not look only at the cheapest input price. Coding agents, long-form generation, and structured extraction can produce substantial output. A model with inexpensive input tokens but expensive output tokens may cost more for your real workload than a model with a higher input rate.

Build a Provider Cost Comparison

Start with each model's current published input and output rate. Providers revise prices and add model variants frequently, so record the date beside every rate. Compare native model names, model versions, context-window features, and whether cached input or batch pricing applies. A useful spreadsheet has these columns: provider, model, input cost per 1M, output cost per 1M, cached-input cost per 1M, average input tokens, average output tokens, and cost per request.

Use this calculation for every row:

request_cost = (input_tokens / 1000000 x input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1000000 x output_rate)

For example, assume a coding task sends 18,000 input tokens and receives 4,000 output tokens. If a selected model costs $3 per 1M input tokens and $15 per 1M output tokens, the calculation is:

request_cost = (18000 / 1000000 x 3) + (4000 / 1000000 x 15) = $0.114

At 2,000 similar requests per month, that workload costs about $228. This is more actionable than comparing a provider's headline price because it reflects the input-to-output ratio your application actually creates.

Measure Tokens Before Making a Model Decision

Estimate tokens from production logs, not from character counts. A short chat application may have a low input-to-output ratio, while an autonomous coding workflow can resend repository context, system policies, previous messages, and tool output on every turn. In the latter case, input-token pricing and prompt caching can dominate the bill.

Log the model, request type, input tokens, output tokens, latency, success rate, and user-visible quality. Then calculate a blended monthly rate:

monthly_cost = sum of all request_cost values for a model

Also track cost per successful task. A cheaper model is not truly cheaper if it requires retries, produces invalid JSON, misses tool calls, or generates code that needs extensive correction. For practical use, compare capable models in tiers: premium models for difficult architecture or debugging, balanced models for daily implementation, and fast low-cost models for classification, summaries, routing, and simple edits.

Use 59API Without Rewriting Your SDK Integration

59API is useful when you want low-cost, pay-as-you-go access while preserving an existing agent or application workflow. It relays native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, without requiring a model downgrade. It is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based applications, so the operational change can be as small as switching the endpoint and API key.

Here is a minimal OpenAI SDK configuration pattern:

import OpenAI from "openai";
const client = new OpenAI({
  baseURL: "https://api.59api.com",
  apiKey: process.env.FIFTYNINE_API_KEY
});
const result = await client.chat.completions.create({
  model: "your-selected-model",
  messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Summarize these support tickets." }]
});

Before rollout, run the same representative prompt set through your current provider and 59API. Capture token usage from each response, multiply it by the current per-1M rates, and compare output quality, completion latency, and failure rates. This controlled test gives a defensible number for savings instead of relying on generic claims.

Reduce Spend After Selecting a Provider

For teams that need compatible access to Claude and GPT models at a competitive pay-as-you-go rate, 59API is a practical option to include in the comparison. Create an account, test it against your real requests, and use its referral rebate as an additional way to lower ongoing API spend.
