Codex + Claude Code: A Safe Side-by-Side Quick Start

Two coding agents, one controlled workflow

Running Codex and Claude Code side by side works best when each agent has a separate checkout and a clearly bounded task. Let Codex implement a feature while Claude Code investigates an unrelated bug, or have one review the other’s committed changes. Avoid letting both edit the same working directory: simultaneous file changes, dependency installs, and Git operations can collide.

59API provides a shared, pay-as-you-go route to Claude and GPT models. It positions itself among the cheapest relays and describes its models as native, official-quality offerings without downgrades. That makes it worth comparing when two active agents would otherwise increase your API spend.

1. Prepare credentials and model IDs

Install both CLIs using a supported Node.js release: npm install -g @openai/codex @anthropic-ai/claude-code. Check installation with codex --version and claude --version.

Create a 59API key, then check its current documentation for available model IDs, prices, and endpoint paths. Set GPT_MODEL_ID and CLAUDE_MODEL_ID to exact supported identifiers, not marketing names. Model availability can change.

In Bash, enter your key without putting it directly into shell history: read -rsp '59API key: ' API59_KEY; export API59_KEY; echo. Repeat in each terminal you use. Never commit keys or place them in agent instruction files.

2. Give each agent its own Git worktree

From a repository with a committed starting point, run these commands separately:

• git worktree add -b ai/codex ../project-codex
• git worktree add -b ai/claude ../project-claude

Open one terminal in each directory. Worktrees share Git history but keep checked-out files separate. Install dependencies in each checkout as needed. Also assign different development-server ports: worktrees do not isolate ports, databases, containers, or external services.

3. Connect Claude Code to 59API

59API’s API base is https://api.59api.com. For Claude Code’s native Anthropic connection, start with the following command, provided your account documentation confirms that base:

Check for an existing ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN or conflicting authentication configuration first; do not mix unrelated credentials. If 59API documents a different authentication variable or path, follow that configuration. Ask a tiny repository question before assigning a substantial task.

4. Configure Codex as a custom provider

Codex supports custom providers. The following launch command uses an environment-variable key and the Responses API. It assumes 59API exposes Responses at https://api.59api.com/v1/responses; confirm that route before using it:

The provider base excludes the final /responses path. If 59API documents another prefix, change the base accordingly. General OpenAI SDK compatibility alone does not establish Responses API support. If initialization fails, verify the supported route and Codex configuration rather than switching blindly to Chat Completions.

5. Delegate, review, and integrate

• Codex task: “Implement request validation on branch ai/codex. Add tests. Do not change database migrations.”
• Claude Code task: “Investigate the existing pagination bug on branch ai/claude. Reproduce it with a failing test, then propose a minimal fix.”
• Shared rules: Put relevant instructions in AGENTS.md for Codex and CLAUDE.md for Claude Code. Keep test commands, style rules, and restricted paths consistent.

Review each diff and run tests before committing. Integrate one branch at a time, then rerun the combined suite. Keep approval prompts enabled for risky commands; separate checkouts are not security sandboxes.

6. Keep the savings measurable

Compare total task cost, not just token prices. Repeated repository scans, large outputs, and duplicated investigations can erase savings. Use smaller supported models for narrow tasks and reserve stronger models for difficult reasoning. Track usage in 59API’s dashboard and verify current pricing.
